Morning guys.

If i have to get Vista for a gaming machine which one would i look at.
I have no intention of running a media centre on the pc only games.

thnx

all i can say is if you want to use more than 3.5 GB RAM, a 64-bit OS is needed.

Vista Ultimate...

I dont like vista... windows xp 64bit will do the job and also download directx 10 LV for windows xp and play games in dx10 mode

Ok yeah i have 4 gig installed in the machine so 64 bit will be used.

driver issues with xp 64bit and not sure how effective dx10 in xp is. not everyone is successful with dx10 in xp according to different forums i have visited.

most gaming pc's have some version of vista with minimum being " home premium"

isnt the 4GB ram issues solved in Sp1 ?? im pretty sure it is.

I would not go the XP route for gaming, it has no Dx10 support and dx11 is on its way ....

If a computer has 4 gigabytes (GB) of random-access memory (RAM) installed, the system memory that is reported in the System Information dialog box in Windows Vista is less than you expect.

For example, the System Information dialog box may report 3,120 megabytes (MB) of system memory on a computer that has 4 GB of memory installed (4,096 MB).

Note You can access the System Information dialog box in the following ways:
Click Start, type System in the Search box, and then click System under Programs.
Double-click System in Control Panel.
Click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Properties.
Click Show more details in the Windows Vista Welcome Center window.
Note Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) changed how components of the user interface (UI) report memory. For example, some components of the Windows Vista SP1 UI report when there are 4 GB or more of total physical memory installed on the computer.

For more information about how memory is reported in Windows Vista Service Pack 1, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 will report 4 GB of system memory (RAM) on systems that have 4 GB of memory installed

so in other words if you install vista sp1 you will be fine.

the version of vista required for gaming is not important really, you can buy any version since they all fully support gaming. just make sure it is sp1 version, if not make sure to patch it to sp1 via windows updates.

But if it's 32bit it will still not be able to use all of it.

Agreed

But i still dont like vista :D

Windows 7 will be next step

Ok, let's clear up the misconception here. If you have 4 or more gigs of ram, 32 bit Vista with service pack 1 will report it as such, but it still can't access all 4 or more gigs. It's a technical limitation of 32 bit processors.

If you don't want any media centre fancy things, Vista Business will do great. It has Aero, but lacks some of the features in Ultimate, but like you said you don't need those.

DX10 is never going to work on XP, no matter what forum and users claim otherwise. At best it's a small subset that introduces much instability.

Thats pretty much it all summed up.

Thank you for all the response.
So one more question. if i have an AMD or Intel multi core CPU will the 64bit OS benefit the CPU or will it run the same as on a 32 bit OS "take memory out of the equation "

Nope it will run the same but a few games are optimzed for 64 bit and a couple of programs :), 64 bit is fast beomcing the standard i think :).
