Vista for Gaming PC

Why exactly would you recommend 64bit over 32? (for killa and grim)

I have used both. 64bit is the more stable of the two. The only reason why one would go for the x86 one is if you have quite a few programs which can't run under 64 bit. Most programs run without any issues. The only two programs which I have which doesn't run under 64 bit is aquamark and the latest leasure suit larry game( for some reason the older ones have no issues but the latest one can't).

On stability the witcher would crash every 5 hours under vista 32 bit but I have only experienced one crash every under x64 and I have finished it 2 times under x64 and before that 2 times under x86. This is due to x64's better memory management.

I would recommended 64bit home premium.

Its faster
It addresses all of your RAM, in my case 4 GIG's
It doesn't slow down after a few months.
It runs ten times faster than 32bit.
No driver issue that I expected.

All in all, I can honestly say that this is the best OS I have used. I hated Vista when I first tried it, I actually still do, the 32bit version that is. For some reason 64 just keeps on going. As I said it doesn’t slow down after installing programs etc, it is just solid. It also has never crashed; blue screened, rebooted or shutdown on me. I also thought games would suck on it, wrong again, my games actually run better than they did on XP 32.

Citation needed.

I recommend 64bit home premium btw.

Whats the price diff between home/64/32/premium...etc

And, whats with the media centre someone mentioned? Who has that and how/why is good/bad? and which specific OS does it come with and what is exactly the media centre? - IS it just software within Windows?

vista will be dumped after windows 7 come out, then u hv to spend more money to buy the new one. Do u remember windows me OS? how many ppl r using that now?

There is no set release date for Win7. Hell, The Beta is only out in Januray.

How long did it take for Vista to go gold after the Beta came out?

Windows Vista Home Basic -32 Bit DVD Only R 799
Windows Vista Home Premium - 32 Bit /DVD Only R 1 099
Windows Vista Business - 32 Bit / DVD Only R 1 399
Windows Vista Ultimate - 32/64 Bit / DVD Only R 1 899

Yeah Media Centre is essentially just software built into Vista that allows you to manage all your media, it runs in full screen where you can flip through all your music movies etc...Pretty nifty, although I find it easier to fire up media player. As far as I know it only comes with Ultimate, but not to sure.

True, might be some time before you see Win 7.

Media center allows you to watch TV on your PC too, you can record shows but schedules in SA are not supported(thanks to monochoice) and requires a 3rd party service, I use Media Center as my PVR.

I bought the 32-bit version and then just ordered a 64-bit DVD from Microsoft. For the 64-Bit I only paid shipping charges.

It costs R93 to order the 64bit disc from MS and takes about 2-3 weeks to get here. Only ultimate retail has both the x86 and x64 discs in the box for all other version you have to order the 64bit disc unless you go dsp and get a 64bit disc straight away.

The media centre in Home Premium and Ultimate is special application that can be used to record tv shows, organise your library of files and so on. Think of Windows Media Player on steroids. It it just software within Windows. Previously used to be a stand alone edition of Windows but now is intergrated to the 2 editions I mentioned above.

When you say records TV shows - do you record from/via your TV, or are you recording via steaming (or whatever you call it) to your PC?

If you have a TV/satellite tuner card installed in your PC, just plug the TV aerial/satellite cable in, tune your channels and you have a PVR with ability to burn shows/movies to DVD.

Ok.

I'm upgrading new PC/OS next month and trying to fimilairize myself a bit with stuff.

Was going to use ubuntu, and thought about MAC so really undecided now.

I use MythTV as my PVR in ubuntu, Vista Media center is much easier to setup and use but I prefer MythTV.

If you decide to build an HTPC you can try out mythbuntu for free and if it does not work out then get Vista or wait for windows7.
