I have a Dell laptop that came with a Vista CD. The 'For Distribution with a new Dell PC' only disk.

The lap had XP installed on it. I just installed Vista and deleted and changed partition size in the process. My understanding is that by deleteing the partition I would have erased the XP installation and so it wasn't an upgrade but a full install that would have taken place.

1) Am I correct in the assumption above.
2) Should Vista ask me for the CD key? (I have it but it hasn't asked me for it)

I think all it does is check the code on your motherboard and therefore you won't have to type in the cd-key. I have two copies of XP that came with a Sony and HP computer and neither asked for the cd-key, I'm sure its the same for Vista.

As for the assumption, don't assume it makes an ass out of 'u' and 'me' (gosh that was lame :D:D:D). Wait for one of the cleverer people to come and tell you what's happening, as most people will vouch on this forum: "he doesn't even understand himself sometimes" :p

Vista should automatically delete the XP partition if it was an upgrade install, so I'd say you are correct that it is a full install. Vista might ask you for a CD key :p I've installed an OEM version of Vista that asked a CD key and then another OEM Vista didn't...

Just keep the CD key handy in case you need it. But if 30 days have passed since the install you can be quite confident that you won't need to enter a CD key :)

If you want to make super duper sure that your hard drive is clean before installing Vista you can get DBAN here: http://dban.sourceforge.net/

You only need to run the "0 method" to blank the hard drive completely.
