Ive noticed that microsoft are really trying to make it difficult to downgrade Vista laptops to WInXP.Ive got a Compaq 6720s laptop that is given me grey hairs.I manage to load WinXP but the LAN and vga drivers just dont work.I even went as far as creating a customized WinXP disc , and injecting over 300MB of additional drivers into the installation but still no enjoy. If anybody has managed to successfully install XP on 1 of these pieces of **** , help me out.

Thanks

Watch out if you downgrade from XP to Vista, microsoft is trying to force vista onto people so badly you legally can't go back to your old copy of XP after downgrading to vista in some cases.

Just asking but have you tried searching google for the latest XP drivers to those devices?

Yeah i phoned MS , and they said it was fine.

Googled.Other ppl are also having issues.

In what cases btw?

I thought they made it easier to go back to XP a while back already? Either way, you format, and install XP. Nothing related to Vista can be causing driver problems, or is it very different with laptops?

If you have a Vista Business (and up) license then it includes an XP Pro license. So if you're really struggling to install XP from a CD you created yourself, or having real difficulty finding the correct drivers for your laptop on their support site, then request a XP Pro CD from HP which should have everything included that you need.

I got a legal XP Pro CD for my laptop from Acer and had no problems installing it, I just downloaded a few drivers from their support site to upgrade it to the latest version. It helps if you know exactly what the make and model of the components on your laptop are to find the specific drivers you need.

Looks like there are XP drivers for most of the components available at HP

Check your documentation or in Device Manager to see what graphics card/chip is on the system - oh I see you can get detailed specifications at HP as well - looks like the Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 and if those drivers are not installed with the chipset drivers at the link above, you should be able to find them at Intel.

Thanks Grav!ty for the link.Just what i needed.Whats really weired is that i searched for the laptop model and got another link which had all the drivers except the audio and graphics drivers.

Busy upgrading a HP 530 to XP now had no problems finding drivers will post later to let you know if they work or not I dont see why not though. I have done a couple of upgrades on HP's, Acers and LG's and all have been fine.

Hey guys,

I know this is quite an old thread, but I have just bought myself a new laptop and as much as I would love to embrace Vista, my work software is not compatible with it and won't be for at least a year.

So I am needing to get XP onto my laptop. Googling it resulted in me stumbling onto this thread. My laptop is an LG R405-A.CB71Z with Vista Business.

Now my intial thought was to format the hard drive and install XP onto it. Now I see I may have a few problems, one being that the drive is SATA and XP does not recognise it.

I then saw talk elsewhere of creating a partition and setting up a dual boot instead.

Option 1 - Dual Boot

It’s by far the easier and best method to run XP instead of Vista if you have another partition or hard disk. Simply boot up any XP setup media and install XP into different partition or hard drive than the Vista installation. Once completed, you can choose to boot up either XP or Vista, and has the best of both world.

My question is what option have you guys taken and what pitfalls should I look out for?

Thanks in advance.

download the sata driver off the net & then use nLite to make a XP cd that includes it. Simple.
