Hey

I recently got Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit.

I'm having some problems with the networking, though... I connect to the internet with ADSL and a Telkom router in router mode, right. With XP, this setup works 100% when I manually set the IP, subnet, DNS etc.

But in Vista, the computer seems to have trouble connecting to the LAN. The connection icon has the little yellow exclamation over it, and it says "limited connectivity" in the network centre.

The problem is very random. It doesn't seem to make a difference whether I do the network settings manually, whether I set it to auto, whether I enable or disable IPv6 (still don't know how that setup works) etc... It will sit with "limited connectivity" for minutes at a time before it will randomly be able to connect to the LAN and the internet. Sometimes I have to reset the router before it will do anything. Using the diagnose feature Vista has has been fruitless.

Any ideas?

So you manually enter the settings and it still gives that error? Maybe try letting your router act as a DHCP server?

Is Vista using the correct NIC drivers?

Verify it by booting in XP and checking what drivers XP uses - then switches back to Vista and compare it there.

Chances are the install program had a little queer session (ie borked) and installed either

- the correct driver, but with incorrect parameters
- the correct driver, with correct parameters, but it is an outdated (beta) driver
- the incorrect driver
- or it just doesn't want to work just to spite you... :D

format c: /s :D

Check first what NIC drivers it's using, and compare it to the working XP installation.

Question - do you dual-boot Vista and XP? It can be that they are sharing the drivers, and XP's NIC drivers is causing confusion in Vista...

Phew, never mind... I fixed it.

It was a problem with the ethernet drivers.

WARNING: Vista and the ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 motherboard don't get along! If you have this board, get the BETA driver from here to get your LAN working properly.
