Can anyone tell me why I should install any other version of Vista than starter edition on a home PC?
As far as I can see, all the missing `features' are superfluous since I use better, third party products to do the same job.
At R400 it looks like the way to go for home machines...
I have yet to see the value in the additional R450 (more than double the price) for home basic or whatever they call it.

iirc, from my days of working with XP starter edition, it was highly limited in its functionality (no more than three windows open at once, limited resolution etc) not sure if Vista version is AS limited, but would expect it to have some limits which may drive you round the bend.

Think Vista starter is the same, 3 windows max and not very "Multi-task" freindly. Rather get XP Pro or Vista Home Basic :)

Windows Vista Starter

Aimed at beginner computer users in emerging markets who can only afford a low cost PC. As with the XP version, Windows Vista Starter (it was briefly going to be called Windows Starter 2007) is a subset of Vista Home Basic, and will ship in a 32-bit version only (no 64-bit x64 version). Vista Starter will allow only three applications (and/or three windows) to run simultaneously, will provide Internet connectivity but not incoming network communications, and will not provide for logon passwords or Fast User Switching (FUS). Vista Starter is analogous to XP Starter Edition. This version will only be sold in emerging markets.

Windows Vista Starter is lacking a number of unique features found in most of the other Vista product editions. There is no Aero user interface, for example, and no support for Microsoft's new domain-like home networking scheme. Other missing features include DVD Maker, gaming common controller support, and image editing with enhanced touchup.

The marketing message: For beginner computer users in emerging markets who can only afford a low cost PC, Windows Vista Starter provides a more affordable and easy introduction to personal computing because it is lower priced, tailored to the needs of beginner personal computer users, compatible with a wide range of Windows-based applications and devices, and tailored to each market.

Edit: There is a nice comparison table further down the page, and after reading that, I would install Hardy if I were u!

Thanks guys - that thee windows at a time is a joke lol...
Rather pathetic...

Microsoft marketing: Hey, let's lower the price of Windoze for Africans.
CEO: Great idea, but we'll first spend some money taking out useful features - we wouldn't want the wealthy Africans buying the cheap product.
Microsoft marketing: Heh, they won't know the difference until they install and then have to upgrade later - that should bite them for supporting piracy in the past.
CEO: Yep, gotta make some money out of those savages.

Hmmmm what if you ran your old Windows 98 under Windows Virtual Machine? Many old offices apps would work etc......hmmmmm or some clever dick could write a Windows version of WINE.....

Horribly slow I'm afraid... but still far better than some butchered vista, esp. on newer hardware. In that case I would just stick with Linux. Vista butchered edition is just a dumb idea of Microsoft trying to tell the savages of the third world that they feel sorry for us imo...

I agree. Windows is a lot cheaper for other people than it is for us.

What would you guys recommend?

I have to build a pc for my in-laws.
They just want to use it for their 12yr olds school projects etc.

I have to keep the price as low as possible so I'm looking at either XP Home(R989.00) or
this Vista Starter Edition(R399)

What's the hardware recommendations for Vista Starter Edition?

Install Linux! (Pref Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron)

It's free, and it works! :D

Dude, they are going to keep phoning me for help all the time.
I'd rather go for XP then. At least I'm familiar with it.

They will kill you if you use vista starter.

If xp home is too expensive, shiver me timbers and a bottle of rum.

Everyone seems to hate Microsoft and Windows so much... I can't understand why they don't just pirate it.

If you think you're technically-savvy enough to use Linux as your only OS... Believe me, you're technically-savvy enough to find a hacked Windows which Microsoft will never ever detect.

Anyway, unless you want DirectX 10... (The hax for DX10 in XP are not perfect...) Get XP.

Not unless they make a DX10 version of freecell or solitaire.
