Vista still long way off

At least they are taking their time, and sorting out the problems, instead of releasing it with big security holes.

But the business version will be released sooner, September/October.

Yeah. I'd much rather that M$ sort out any problems that may come up and give us a truly stable and awesome system.

They're porting it to Linux?

Has that happened before?

I'll wait untill a PC has 2 GB of ram before I would even consider installing Vista.

No need. Even the beta runs smoothly with no more than that used by XP.

I hope they have finally rewritten and fixed Windows' appalling multitasking, especially where disk activity is involved.

Of course Vista no doubt still uses Windows' basic achilles heel, the registry. Never fails to be the weak point that results in a trashed and unfixable system. As long as they continue to use that misguided mess they may never be able to produce an OS that does not require regular re-installation. It would help if they at least reigned in software producers by making it an absolute requirement that all changes made and the reasons have to be fully disclosed to the end user.

Well let's hope Vista is their OSX (Apple's first decent OS).

Funny you should mention it but Apples latest - 10.5 aka Leopard - is due out at around the same time.

Reminds me of a certain signature:

The day MicroSoft produces something that doesn't suck, is when they start making vacuum cleaners!

That is what they promised way back with XP ... an OS has become irrelevant these days as more services and apps are being deployed to the web.

Wouldn't that be nice. I spend a lot of time compressing and decompressing files and restoring databases etc, and during that time I may as well go read a book. Bloody MS.

Will it really though?

Vista was only slated to come out on 1 December 2006 so a 1-month delay can hardly hit M$ hard.

But when that month includes the silly season it's a pretty hard hit.
