Vista updates at 85mb today :(

Is there an alternative Vista updater, like Autopatcher?

Updates are 85mb today, I can't afford it to be honest.

There's 2 desktops and my laptop to update and that amounts to too much bandwidth.

Why is MS such fools to close services such as Autopatcher?

Is there a similar service like autopatcher which is available on the net?

Not really. There is a german/swiss site that comes close called heiser security or something....a quick google should find it. The have something similar which might allow you to d/l the stuff only once and not for every PC. Dunno if it works for Vista.

I've started updating individually, I just need to be better prepared in future and buy prepaid GB's to do it :p AFAIK you can update with local, so it's my own fault ;)
 
damn man you seriously goin on about 85mb?

its keep your OS update and a little more safe, 85mb aint alot of bandwidth either unless your on 3g or something

i mean your looking at about 15 bucks with adsl to update it

also is it microsoft's fault our pricing is so high?

would you not have to download the updates via auto patcher?
 
Use Linux. Why do people still use a crappy OS and then complain about it?

Installed an entire office suite yesterday on Linux - under 50MB.

Did I moan? I asked for an alternative update method, because I don't have local Gigs at the moment. Did I say something about Microsoft other than they caused Autopatcher to close down?

And yes, I would only need to download Autopatcher ONCE a month and update any amount of computers I needed, does that answer your questions? :rolleyes:

Linux is just as bad when it comes to using bandwidth, I've seen a few threads about it here.

I'm not complaining either, I asked for an alternative update method as I said above.

The difference with Linux is you can almost always avoid the updates and not have a serious security issue on your hands.

Yup....copy /var/cache/apt/archives/* from the box which did updates to all the rest, and then just update from there too. Or if you have a server gateway box, install apt-cache there and use that as your repo (optimized for the package stuff), or use squid as a transparent proxy.... :cool:

Oh, yeah, sorry I forgot: M$ autohops you to another server regardlessly, that's why you can't use a transproxy. Furthermore, due to the WGA stuff, their entire platform wouldn't *allow* you to transparently copy the patches from one place to the next. Only viable-ish option is a full WSUS server, and that's just plain stupid, ain't it? :D
 
It was a sad day indeed when autopatcher got closed down :(

Anyone mind sharing with me what is the absolute worst thing that could happen should one Not update your Windows at all?
 
o is that how auto patcher works

i was wondering how to worked

microsoft had to close them down, thats bypassing all their BS with one download

He wasn't complaining about his OS, just asking for advice for alternate methods on getting updates......
 
The Linux fanboys who keep trolling Vista threads will be the main reason I won't give Linux another shot. So be it.

Yup I agree. I have nothing against Linux. Ran it for quite some time myself.
But I stick to Windows for compatibility reasons and the more I see these kinds of comments, the less likely I am to try and make an effort with Linux

Exactly, and to prove a point, not to become a loser and flaming another person for the "software" they use. Usability, great features and general flexibility is what is needed in software, not some idiot fan boys that can't make recommendations because the software is good, no, rather they tell you, you suck because you don't use it.

Stuff Linux and stuff all it's fanboys :mad:
