I agree, Linux fans please read the thread carefully before replying. As stated above alternatives were requested not a Linux promotion.

tera ... I feel your pain man. I also believe that there should be an alternative 'autopatcher like' update procedure.

Not 6 months ago I was faced with no 3g coverage in my area and no telkom phone to boot ... so all my updates was via gprs. that was a biatch.

yes if you have adsl it is not a cost issue.

My going back to xp was the best choice I made. At least now I get to enjoy my monster with SP3 installed.

My laptop does support Xp, but to be honest, I'm enjoying Vista on it. It's nice and I enjoy working on it. Those Xp-Vista conversions aren't like the real thing ;)

Maybe we'll see an autopatcher resurrection, hosted somewhere in Poland :p
 
Why don't you ppl just download the new autopatcher, setup route sentry and update? It works 100% all patches are downloaded from M$.

I actually never run updates on Windows, Vista or XP. Just the service packs when they come and a good anti-virus. No problems at all if I keep safe. :p

And I have not figured out how to avoid the updates on Linux without constantly having the notification on your desktop, there's no choice to hide or cancel individual updates. You have to keep them in your list as far as I can see. Probably some terminal method to get rid of it? :(

you should be specific and state the distro you use. Never had such a problem with Fedora or Debian.
 
regarding Vista, is there no way to tell the bloody updater to ignore those language packs :mad:

Also does it always use local to update?

You right click on an update in the list by clicking "view all" or something, then you click "hide this update".

Not sure if it uses local always, read here that it does at times ;)
 
Use XP with a Vista Skin...works great 4 me, and there are no performance hits either...

I mean, think about it - what do you like about vista other than it's looks?

Yeah... Was a whole new machine. New HDD, new RAM, new mobo etc. I actually re-installed XP about 4 times before I gave up.

It was a 32-bit version tho. Perhaps 64-bit would've run smoother but I didn't have a copy.

I've had vista ultimate with SP1 running for a while now (since SP1 was released) and haven't had a single problem yet *touch wood*
