Hi guys,

If this has been discussed elsewhere, please let me know so that I don't waste your time.

I have recently got an Asus G2 laptop with Vista Ultimate on it, as wish to connect it to my wireless network at home which is running on the Telkom 5102 router/modem. My home pc is running XP and is using a wired connection to connect, and a friend has connected his XP laptop to the network fine.

I have tried a number of workarounds, like setting a static set of IP's allowed on the network and setting my laptop to that IP, and changing the WEP keys etc....

I know that the problem is so general that there isn't much chance of there being a definite solution, but I'd just like to know if it's a common problem making such a wireless connection, as my friend who uses Vista has the same issue and bypasses it by using a wired connection.

It would seem that connecting Vista to the router is pretty easy to manage with a wired connection, but a bit more complex with wireless.

Any help would be appreciated, guys.

Thanks.

Get rid of wep, get rid of all wifi related security features, slow it down to its lowest speeds, basically set it to the absolute minimum settings, and once you have a connection, you can then start speeding things up, and enabling security features... Easier to turn off all the fancy stuff now to save time when troubleshooting!

Get a decent router .... my Vista laptop can see my Netgear router just fine at home but then I am using WPA-PSK.

hi stonedhamster.

I have exactly the same laptop and OS as you. But I have a Linksey router connected to an iBurst modem and it all works dandy.

I think the encryption setting is WPA_PSK i will check when i get home.

will let you know.

cheers.

Linksey? WTF??

@stonedhamster, its probably going to be ideal to start by removing the WEP key from your router and temporarily disabling security. Next i would remove all of the connections in Vista network and sharing centre, after that scan for the network assuming your SSID is not hidden. If you can connect and ping etc then enable a WPA key and configure your wireless connection on your laptop to use it and all should be fine.

Vista is not ideal for.... well anything! but it works just fine, Im running it on my dell laptop and it hasnt skipped a beat.
