Hey guys and girls

I have the full Windows Vista Business Edition installed.

I am having one problem, our file server (keep all our movies, tv shows etc on) is running winxp. We have user accounts and passwords for people copying off the server, now i cant connect to it because I am running vista.
I can see the server, but cannot log in to it to copy files. (it comes up saying the username and password is incorrect)

Can any1 please help, I dont particulary want to go back to XP just so i can connect to the server. We are going to keep the server on XP.

Any ideas please!

Okay, so i have tried many different pc's that require you to log on an account over the network to accesss the shared files. it seems as though Vista does not like trying to access peoples pc's that require a password to access it.

I had the same problem with a lan storage drive. After struggling for a looong time, the thing just accessed it. Still don't know how I did it but at least I can access my drive now - thanks for the article, will study it later.

Having same problem. I have 2 machines running XP pro. I can access Vista machine from both XP machines.
In vista under network, i can see the 2 xp machines, but when i click on it, it asks me for username and pw. I type in the username i use on xp machine, but it doesnt accept those credentials..........
Me not to happy with vista thus far :(

Its not the ideal solution but try enabling the guest account with no pw and using that even just as a test. I've found it works in some situations where other usernames and pw's don't, although that was XP-XP, haven't tried Vista yet.

even the guest account doesnt work XP-Vista.

If the XP system has simple file sharing i can access them from vista, but if permissions etc on the xp machine i cannot connect when using vista, it just keeps saying username and pass in wrong

okay, i have figured it out!

open secpol.msc console then local policies then security options then Network security: LAN Manager authentication level and change it to "Send LM & NTLM responses" and there you go. all sorted. spent all night doing this

A long time of looking through regedit, and then I was wondering if they changed the network settings, so a friend said i must run secpol.msc and compare everything to a xp machine. it took me a hell of along time and irritation. but its all fixed so YAY

Also saved for future reference while I ponder about getting Vista or not.

How are you guys finding Vista otherwise?

Well I installed it yesterday, full legal version.
At first it was irritating and a bit different, but now as i am getting used to it i am really liking it. Well I personally dont think all the hype about it was really worth it, but its nice and new, also slick.
If you are thinking of upgrading, do it!

Also running RTM at this stage - got 30 days before it dies. Only problem I have with it is that it does not work with my Leadtek Winfast TV 2000 XP TV card - I can get picture via the composite inputs but no sound on TV or the FM tuner embedded in the Winfast. I e-mailed Leadtek and they did point me to beta drivers but they not working with my Sigmatel onboard sound.

I have the same tv card! Vista found the drivers for me on the net!
I havnt tried it out yet, will do so when i get home. O ja, i figured out another irritating thing, when you press Start-Shut Down the first option is always SLEEP! To fix this, goto

Control Panel
Power Options
Choose when to turn off the display
Change advanced power settings
Power Buttons and Lid
+Start Menu Power button
++Setting Shutdown (it was originally Sleep)

Yes, I also installed those drivers. Winfast (the tv pvr and FM proggy) appears to be the problem though - does not pass the audio via the audio crossbar to the input on the soundcard hence no sound on my video and FM.

Update on secpol.msc
It seems the home versions of vista doesnt have a secpol.msc. Well as far as i remember xp home doesnt have security policy either, so not really a big surprise... So that fix doesnt work in home editions and i havent been able to find any other fixes that helped.
I have a gigabyte tv tuner, supported via software in xp media centre, but it seems no drivers for vista :(
