Well i got vista ultimate right, i put in CD run it tells me there are some compatability issues what not, but can download appropriate drivers to fix it, all fine and dandy. But the catch comes when i select to upgrade right cause i want to keep all the origanal stuff on my HDD, but when it starts up for the first time after installing/upgrading it starts loading kicks a blue screen with righting then restarts, and that my friend as as far as i got windows vista to go, what do i do know, i know it should work cause my MOB is vista support and the only thing it could not graft was my sound card to which there was drivers for.

Help i have waisted SO much money.

SAD sad SAD man.:confused::(:mad:

did you upgrade from xp? or did you do a fresh install?

He says he wants to keep the original stuff on the harddrive so I presume he did an upgrade install from within vista.

@Shank: Backup all your files onto dvd or a second hard drive and do a clean install of vista. Clean installs always work better than upgrading from a present os.

Also is your mobo's bios updating to the latest version??

I had Home premium and i did the same. Upgrade in place and got the same BSOD, had to reinstall after a fromat and a loss of 90gb of music

Well how do you update your bios? Well i did an upgrade not a full install? You telling me that i should format then try and re- install? You think that will work better?

Like i said i running xp pro at the mo, and did an upgrade from within.

Anyways it looks like thats the only option is to format , i really really REALLY hope that works. I cant see what the difference would be actually? But hey you guys know more than me anyways:D

Thanks will give it a try.

Pearljam you say you had the same problem of blue screen and restarting over and over,....? what is BSOD mean by the way?

BSOD - Blue Screen of Death. Something that Windows commonly spits out nowadays !

yea but shank you can also load vista and keep all your old files

there is no need to format your drive as far as i know

You don't have to format here is what you do. Load dvd into disc then start pc make sure it's set to boot from the dvd drive.

Then just install vista, don't format. All your old files and folders will be moved to a directory called windows.old.

find out why she's BSODing. at boot press F8 and disable the auto-reboot. At the BSOD, record the message. if it's a 0x0000007b message, most likely will be your sata/ide/raid/scsi drivers

That should be your best option :)

Ja, your problem must be cause by old drivers trying to load themselves, thats basically the only cause of a BSOD right on startup if you haven't even used the OS yet but you know the hardware works.

I had that problem when I was trying to use some generic drivers for my M-Audio card, which still doesn't have Vista drivers.. but they're coming soon, I hope.

In any case, Windows.Old ftw, my friend had reinstalled about 10-15 times when we were trying to crack Visat and the .old files just keep getting created inside themselves, so theres no limit either.

Well i think my best option is to format i got a spare HDD around will slap everything on it then try again, if that then does not work i will be uber PO'D thats for sure.

I really cant see it being my HDD either when i run the compatability test it just gives me a issue about my Sound card.. But anyways gonna give it a bash see how it goes.

PS: Should i stick with XP or Should i try Vista instead...im thinking real hard about the migration, i have heard lots of negitive feed back feom ppl.

Might as well try it, you'll probably want to keep it unless you have more serious problems. But.. you bought it already, should have asked before.

I've also heard a lot of negative "feedback", most of the time people haven't even used Vista but it's very "in" to hate it atm. I like the random figures you always read, like "well it runs 20% slower and its crap" which they made up all by themselves or read one beta review about Nvidia's drivers.

Those reviews give a false perspective. They don't use beta drivers in the review so they are using whql drivers which are a month old compared to the beta drivers. Most users use the beta drivers. For most part they give very good performance there's still the odd game which struggles but for most games the performance is pretty good.

Ja, I use the Beta drivers too, I meant the first beta Vista drivers, those were terrible. People still think Vista performance is bad compared to XP, but the latest drivers are almost at XP levels and actually run a game or two better with DX10 hardware.

I'm not sure if it'll always be a bit worse, or possibly get better?

Well im just concerned about problems that might arise if you know what im getting at, im not the most clued up junkie. I know how to solve problems but i need time, and time is the issue here.

Lets put it right up there, i have got the vista package but i can sell it to a mate of mine no worries, thats why i ask is the effort worth it? Or should i stick to XP in the mean time which gives me no hassles what so ever.

Oh yes its vista as stable as XP?

Arg this is getting a bit much now im starting to second guess myself now:confused::(

I used Vista, was appalled by the drivers and switched back to XP. Vista is still lying next to my PC to be installed after the first service pack is released, though :)

Vista Ultimate....regular BSOD!!!

Vista SUX!!

heh, a joke?

My Vista's been just as stable as XP, and drivers aren't a issue for me, depends what you're using. A lot of small periphials like webcams, scanners, wireless adaptors might or not not have drivers. Depends how old the stuff is and what brand.
