SMSing ‘VVM On’ to 123 is NOT "(FREE)" as stated in the article..

Just found out the hard way.

I also would've preferred if this was free but R9.99 aint gonna break the bank. Very convenient and an awesome show-off for R9.99 pm ;)

I've sent the sms, the service is active, but when I press voicemail on my iphone it just dials my voicemail as per usual. What am I doing wrong? I've restarted the phone.

Ummm, how hard a way can that be? Isn't a premium-rated SMS only R2.50 at most? And you activate only once...

Try leaving yourself a voicemail from another phone. Otherwise give it a day.

I'd like to know this as well...anyone please? I plan to activate later this evening.

EDIT: OK, so leave myself a voice message and wait a day for full activation? Makes sense. Thanks.

R10 a way fyi

Yeah, that is a hard way indeed for activation! And a sneaky way of actually just charging you the monthly subscription for 1 MONTH anyway despite all the hype about service being free from 1st April to 31st May!

Yeah I don't really need it myself, just tried it out after reading the article as I assumed it would be free! But alas, R10 was deducted.

Just wanted to warn others who were thinking of doing the same.

Thanks for the replies. I'll give it a go & try again tomorrow.
When MBB first mentioned that Vodacom was doing this, I sent the sms, but nothing happened. After reading this article today, I sent the sms again, but got a reply that I'm already subscribed to the service. I then phoned 155, but they could not help me as my contract is with Nashua. A very helpful guy at Nashua could also not help me, but said he'd phone Vodacom & get back to me. He did, but said Vodacom told him that they don't know how to set it up (??? go figure), so he phoned the iStore at Vodaworld & asked a guy there to phone me back. This guy did, but said he couldn't help me & I should phone Vodacom.
I'm getting dizzy from the circular response mode I'm in...

Guys, make sure you dont have Mail Box Plus or Voicemail to SMS active for the service to work.

it's a pity voicemail takes 1 WEEK to actually get delivered to your voice mail box here in SA but in other developed economies around the world some productivity gurus actually put this service to great use by e.g.
- directing all telephone calls to voicemail always and only responding to telephone calls (from messages stored in voicemail) and emails at preset times. What usually happens in that the voice caller calls you on their terms (their convenience, their choice of time etc) and because we love answering calls we drop whatever we may be doing just to take that call! This is not very productive.

So the gurus theorise that you should only take calls at preset times eg between 10h00-12h00 every day. If someone calls you outside of those hours they'll get your voicemail and you can then respond to them in your own time/terms/convenience leaving you to focus on getting your own stuff done...unless of course your job is as a call center consultant and you need to take every call immediately!
