How much do these injections normally cost? Can you buy the ampules and inject yourself instead of the doctor or the pharmacist? Anyone know who has them reasonably priced in JHB?

Thanks

You can have it done by a medical doctor at Seeker's Travel Clinic at Fourways Crossing - costs around R25 which includes the injection. Call Seekers on 011-790-0000 and ask for the Travel Clinic to confirm. You could also try a Dischem or Clicks in your area.

I think you do need a prescription, but you can inject yourself; will work out much cheaper.

These things hurt like all hell even when injected by a trained person. It is not recommended as a DIY job unless you want to be limping and wearing a permanent grimace for the rest of your life.

no its not recommended as a DIY job. Yes it burns like HELL, and No, you don't need a prescription!. The boost in energy is well worth it ;)

Why do you want to inject yourself with Vit B12?
Were you diagnosed with a deficiency?

I have a vit b12 shot every week for 6 weeks then I take a 2 - 3 month break and do it again. It REALLY helps with my energy levels (which are otherwise none existent). Most pharmacies that have a nurse on staff will be able to help you out.

Strange,my Sister and local GP does it without any pain felt...

Sidenote to OP: bought the ampules at R100 for 2,they have to be refrigerated though so they don't normally hand them out

Between 40% to 70% according to various studies suffer from a B12 Deficiency so it's quite common to go for injections,or it should be

Yea, If they know what they're doing - I'm not completely clued up about giving injections, but my other half who is the expert claims there's some nerve you could hit in your backside that could cause paralysis... I'd rather not take the chance - perhaps i'll ask him later and post a more informed reply...

I am not scared of needles or pain and this thing hurt like hell when my doctor gave it to me. I spoke to a paramedic friend and he said that the needle/fluid combo actually tears into your muscle, hence the pain. I was unable to walk for the rest of the day (or actually I could walk but with this funky limp :D)

This thread ties in quite nicely with the one about Coke Zero and Aspartame which has turned into an attack on red meat!

One of the causes of B12 deficiencies from Wiki:

Inadequate dietary intake of vitamin B12. As the vitamin B12 occurs naturally only in animal products (eggs, meat, milk), and a particular strain of nutritional yeast; a vegan diet can produce a deficiency unless one uses supplements or eats enriched food.

The nice thing about the B12 injection is the extra energy it gives you, both mentally and physically. It makes a huge difference...

You should not be deficient if you eat a balanced diet. In the rare instance that you do not (vegan diet), taking an oral supplement is enough. It's only people with pernicious anemia (inability to absorb Vit B12 leading to anemia and neurological problems) who need weekly or monthly injections of Vit B12. Taking unnecessary intramuscular injections is possibly harmful.

What percentage of people eat healthy diets really, and when faced with a weekly injection or daily oral supplements I know where my money lies. But then again thats down to personal preference rather than necessity. Fortunately we have freedom to choose

Of course you do, but IM injection of anything unless necessitated by a doctor is foohardy and even dangerous.
