Hey people,

I have a VKOM 303 USB Modem. I'm using it with the 8ta 10 GB package. I’ve had this since June, so the modem is quite new. Everything was perfect with regards to my speeds up until recently, about a week and a half ago. I am now unable to connect to any website 95% of the time and IF I do connect, the speeds are terrible and barely last because a refresh loads an error page. On rare occasions, everything is fine and my speeds are amazing but that barely lasts a minute. I’ve contacted 8ta with regards to this and they sent a technician over who did a couple of tests and came to the conclusion that my modem is the problem. He tested the speeds with his own modem and then with mine and there was a huge difference in the speeds. Also, my connection with my iPad is fine ( 8ta micro SIM). What is also a bit bizarre to me is that in this period of experiencing the problem, I’ve made Skype calls which worked without a hitch.

This is very surprising for me because as previously mentioned, my modem is like new, I’ve never dropped it or damaged it in anyway. The problem just came out of the blue. So before I go out and buy a new modem, could you guys suggest something for me to do to test it out in any way?

I’ve been using the standard VKOM dashboard, if that matters.

Thanks :)

When there are indications that modem is faulty, warranty replacement is what you should be looking for.

I have had issues with the dashboard with one of these modems about a year ago. A direct dail-up fixed the connection problem. perhaps try a directly dail-up and ignore the dashboard..

Yeah, about that...:o. I kind of misplaced the proof of purchase :( .

How is this done? :)

All you need is to be legitimate owner. If you are, you are not affraid bringing it back to the place you bought it from. :)

So it turns out that it's not my modem that's the problem. I tested my SIM in a Huawei modem and experienced the same problem. I then tested another SIM (MTN) in my VKOM modem and it worked fine.

Anyone know what else the issue could be?

Now it could indicate 8ta network problem. However, it could be other problems as well. Did you test both modems in the same USB port? More shed of light would give if you had noted Cell_ID number in the time it was working well. This tower can be down and modem picks up another one which is either problematic or more distant (which could also trigger power problems). Do you connect on EDGE but previously it was 3G? You give us no essential information to respond properly, RSSI at minimum.

It is a main reason my response looks like coming from a joker. :)

My apologies. I'm not a 100% clued up on this sort of stuff so I didn't know that all the other information was required.

I previously connected on 3G and I'm still managing to connect on 3G using the 8ta and MTN SIM's.
Both the modems were tested in the same USB port.
With regards to the time it works well, it really is few and far between. I'm not even sure I can say that it works well at all.

I read "not always connect and /or stays on 3G". Lock modem to 3G-only and see if it helps. Download MDMA and observe RSSI. Not sure whether MDMA works with Vkom, but it will work on Huawei.

Will try that tonight. Thanks.

Issue sorted. Just did a system restore and it seems fine. There must have been some settings that were changed which caused this, just not sure what though.
