VLC 2.1.2 playlist window

Is there any way of preventing the playlist window opening prior to the main video window opening.
I have had a look in VLC preferences & there appears no way of stopping this from constantly happening - it's driving me nuts.

i have
the "controller" still opens with the main window - just with the playlist minimized.
what i would like, is only the main video window opening - no others.

need to check "show video within main window"
