What platform are you referring to and how is the chromecast so remarkable?

Any platform.

No one can explain what makes the chromcast remarkable you just need to get one yourself.

I had issues playing high frame rate video on VLC, it was even worse playing x265 video on Windows at 1080p. It's a lot better on my Ubuntu install though, but it's outperformed by mpv, but I'm still a big VLC fan, still have it running as default on a few devices :)

Please enlighten me, just got a Roku 2 days ago and I'm all ears. From what I understand the Roku is like chromecast but more features. Is the implementation in Vlc somehow just very good?

I also have a roku. Can't find a use for it.

My setup is as follows, I have a 55"tv (not smart)

And 2 Samsung x curve soundbars. (one for pc, one for TV)

So I have a chromecast plugged into the soundbar and the soundbar into the the TV.

So youtu.be on phone, pc, laptop, guests phones, tablets etc. Simply cast to the TV via soundbar.

I have plex on the computer and the app on the phone so plex automatically as well casts straight to the TV via soundbar.

Laptop has Bluetooth so I can connect to the soundbar of my choice.

Same with the TV, and tablets.

So my setup is small pc + 12TB (PLEX SERVER).

TV ( two cables, 1 power 1 hdmi)
Wireless Soundbar ( 1 power cable for sub woofer 1 power cable for soundbar)
Chromecast (plugs directly into soundbar)

So essentially a connected wireless setup.

(I hate cables)

That is a nice setup, thanks for the breakdown. Apparently the nice thing with you chromecast is anyone can fling stuff to it, they don't need to be logged into your network like the Roku, does it mirror the screen of your device?

What features do you prefer in the chromecast?

I was contemplating getting one, the Roku channels/apps are quite versatile though, to stream from the plex server to chromecast do you use a mobile device to stream plex to and then from there to the chromecast?

The Roku miracast works well though and the screen mirroring, I have the Roku stick not the very pricey ones.

Roku is premier!
But for me roku is wires for sound wires for display wires for power remotes just to much for my liking.

The chromecast can mirror screens, mirror desktops, mirror individual tabs in Chrome.

You can also cast apps to it and continue working ie on the phone open youtube get a video you like cast the video to the chromecast the chromecast will open its youtube app and play the videos you can switch off your phone or just continue normally and it won't interrupt the casting.

Same with any android app including plex.

So the Roku dashboard, I use plex for that.

I can see the Chromecast is definitely better at casting content from a device, Roku channels are nice but I did mainly want the screen/content casting feature.

Are you using the latest Google chromecast?

That is the wonderful thing... I am not! I am so blown away by the gen1 I cannot even begin to imagine what the gen 2 will be like.

I am filling up my TFSA after that hopefully next month, I will be purchasing the following:

Don't get a chromecast if you don't have lots of Internet data. It downloads beautiful HD wallpapers all day, with no way to disable it.

My first gen chromecast (now dead) was unused for the most part. I have a media server (kodi) plugged in to my TV and found local navigation much easier than casting each time (have a ir receiver and universal remote connected to my server).

True, I might add the 3Tb capped account and two 40Mbps lines so I've never been phased :D

So if it's plugged in and powered on it downloads a stream of images, new one every minute or 2?

Why you guys miss is that it's the same 11 pictures.

Its not an infinite amount like your windows 10 startup screen does.
