Hi

My dad's WinXP machine connects on 3G quite happily, but you cannot browse the web. Pings to various sites return nothing. IP address and the gateway are set to automatic. I noticed something weird in that ipconfig showed the local host and the gateway to be using the same IP address. Tried re-installing, tried another modem, tried Vodacom help desk, no luck yet.

I suspect DNS problems. Any ideas?

The IP and gateway being the same is normal for this type of connection.

To isolate DNS problems get the IP of a well known site (say google) and ping it using the IP and not the host name.

Nothing unusual in the default gateway and local host being the same - they are usually the same for a ppp connection, as the default connection is through the modem on the local host.

Try <nslookup www.google.co.za> from the command line - it'll time out if the DNS serves are giving hassles - which is not that unusual an occurence :-(
