I got hold of a series the other day that I wanted to put in my XBMC library - but not sure how to break it into series from the standard DVD data?

Currently, it's Disc 1, 2, 3 and 3 with a VIDEO_TS folder - and then various VTS 01_1 files in VOB format. I think there are 8 episodes actually ... but do I make each episode a file?

ai thats a mission. Most ripping tools don't cater for VOBs, so you need to create a iso first.

If memory serves a combination of clonedvd, daemon tools and fair use wizard should do the trick.

NB the latest versions of daemon tools are full of some *** adware or something, so consider using Alcohol instead.

DVD decrypter might also work but thats a bit fuzzy in my mind - can't remember whether it can create isos....i think it can but only from discs, not folders.

Others will undoubtedly recommend handbrake instead of fairusewizard, but it just produced *** rips when I played with it so meh.

VidCoder does it I think. Sure I converted a VOB with it once. Use it for pretty much everything.
It's a nice frontend to Handbrake.

Handbrake can convert DVD folders. Also the episodes are mostly split across the VOB files.

Thanks - will try.

So I will then get a list of each individual epiosode?
Does it not just make the VOB something else - or will it split them as well?

I think you are talking about creating menu system. For this job you need full authoring software. I used DCD Decrypter (yes it can create ISO) with companion of DVD Shrink, but the later for reverse purpose - to get rid of menus and unwanted streams, sometimes shrink, and to cut footage from the beginning and end. It has some authoring features, I don't know, worth to try.
BTW, VOBs can be split as you wish.

In Handbrake you will see all the streams it picks up. Just have a look at the time length of each one. Usually 4 episodes per dvd. Once you select an episode you can select the format and container to convert to. You need to do one at a time or load each one into the batch list.
