Vodacom’s Data Contracts are a scam.

While data bundle contracts seem to offer good value in terms of megabytes for your Rand, there is a catch.
If you were to buy a ‘once-off’ data bundle your connection is cut as soon as you have used all the data purchased.
Not so with contract data. It seems obvious that Vodacom wants you to exceed your allocation so they can charge you for “out-of-bundle-data”, at a premium price of course.

If you are using the SIMM in a 3G modem or Router it is not practical to remove the SIMM, put it in a phone and constantly check the balance of your bundle.

What seems to be the most logical option is to use Vodacom’s website to check the balance. However, although the website shows a balance with a date and time it nearly always lies. While it gives the impression of a ‘real-time’ balance this is not the case. I have had to wait HOURS for the system to accurately reflect the true data balance remaining.
The other option is to set a ‘Call Limit’. There are two problems with this.

1. The minimum amount for going over the limit is R50.00. This constitutes 1/3 of the price on a 2GB contract. And for this you will get 25MB of data.
2. The system does NOT automatically stop you passing the R50 limit. Due to some ‘time lag’ it is possible to exceed this amount even though you have specified it as a limit.

My question to Vodacom is simple……
If you can monitor and terminate a pay-as-you-go data bundle in real time, why can’t you do this for contract subscribers? I suspect that you want the contract people to exceed the limit to make extra money out of them. I consider this to be an unfair business practice and it should be reported to ICASA.

What you do is tell everyone you know about it. That is what I do.

You must be new here:whistle:

It's not a CONtract for no reason

The fact that their website shows a Date & Time + Remaining data that is not accurate can mislead the customer into believing that they have more data than that actually do. The website does not say that the information may not be accurate.

Pre-paid and postpaid customers are not provisioned/monitored on the same system. Thats why they cant do real-time like on postpaid. Funny enough only CellC offers this on their Huawei CRM/billing system ;)

it is the OOB shark you be speaking of. Much has been said of this beast and it is not unique to Vodacom. I was pleasantly surprised that 8ta cut off data usage on my mom's iPhone - mostly data used in the house on wifi so the allocation is plenty but she was away for the week - rather than going OOB but there is a lot of disadvantages to a system that doesn't accommodate OOB usage either.

Anyway a factual correction: Postpaid data contracts OOB rate is R1 per meg not R2 so for R50 you will get 50 megs

MTN offers customers with real time updates as well as terminates your access once your own preset limits are reached. When will Vodacom wake up i wonder??

Strangely I have to give Vodacom a big thumbs up!

My two year contract is about 20 months old whereby I was getting 1 Gig a month capped at 1 Gig for R99 a month.
Suddenly they have upped it to 2 Gig a month still at R99 a month....I do not have a problem with that!

I also have no problems checking my balance using *111*500# and I get a good signal here in White River compared to my MTN connection! and I have never had any billing issues with them...maybe I am tempting fate here talking about this:)
