 my so called 3G seems to only be able to manage GSM. Has anyone else found this whole thing to be a bad expensive mistake?

Definitely not! I have been using the 3G system since December 2005 and have had the odd frustrating times, but in general, it has been a lifesaver for me in my business. A lot of the people I have seen complaining about ongoing problems on this forum have only themselves to blame for not having done their homework properly before signing up for the system. They also fail to understand the pitfalls of any radio based technology which, by the pure nature of radio, makes it not as predictable as fixed copper wires.

So basically, I think that 3G/HSDPA has been a huge success in this country in some respects and maybe not so great in others. Think what we were paying for internet connectivity before the launch of 3G/HSDPA by the cell networks in SA!

Generally a very good experience for me as well. I do not often use it, but when I do the speeds are good and it does not often disconnect... Maybe your location?

If you want us to help you, you are going to need to post details so we don't have to make assumptions about the problem you're experiencing.

Some questions:
  1. What profile are you using? - it isn't maybe a 2GOnly profile?
  2. What modem are you using? - make & model required
  3. Are you attempting to use 3G in only one fixed location, and what does Vodacom's coverage map say coverage is supposed to be like in that location?
  4. Assuming you have not done so, yet, use http://speed.vodacom.co.za/ to run indoors and outdoors tests and post the results
  5. Did your 3G modem arrive with a small clip-on external antenna in the box, what happens when you use that clip-on antenna [if applicable]?
PS: Welcome to MyBroadband :).

As ic said we need to know a couple of things first.
I would say the things we need to know first is:-
1) What Modem are you using?
2) Your location?
With answers to these 2 questions the help will come flying in.
