I live in Sandton, using the R450 contract with Vodacom.

The 3G signal on my iPhone is a bit erratic.
Most of the time just stays for a while and then is replaced by "Vodacom E" or simply "Vodacom".
When this happens both email & web access are very slow, sometimes there's no access at all.

Is this a normal occurrence in the area? Does anyone has the same problem?
Maybe congestion is the answer?

My cap is OK by the way.

google "3G cell breathing" it is normal on a highly congested base station.

Definition - Cell breathing is the constant change of the range of the geographical area covered by a cellular telephone transmitter based on the amount of traffic currently using that transmitter. When a cell becomes heavily loaded, it shrinks. Subscriber traffic is then redirected to a neighboring cell that is more lightly loaded, which is called load balancing. Cell breathing is a common phenomenon of 2G and 3G wireless systems including code-division multiple access (CDMA). CDMA2000 and wideband code-division multiple access (WCDMA) are designed to manage cell breathing.

Thanks for the definition.
I'm looking at reading about someone experiencing the same problem though.
I can barely use the internet on my iPhone because of this.
