I'm about to go onto a Blackberry contract. I'm going with Vodacom as this is where I am currently on and my contract is expiring soon.
I am hearing that MTN is the "official" carrier for BB and that some stuff don't work on Vodacom. is this true or BS?

Can I go with Vodacom and get all the 3rd party apps working and use BIS on Vodacom as well as MTN or do they only do proper support on MTN?

IIRC Vodacom was offering blackberry services long before MTN. There are probably a few differences (they offer different free satnav applications for example) but the rest should be the same.

I call BS.

Everything works as normal....no such thing as official carrier

Big BS!!!!! Like Bwana said....Vodacom have been offering Blackberry much longer than MTN. What Blackberry you gonna get????????? Me excited for u big time!!! :-)

I was also thinking it's BS - but when I went to the Blackberry site it only lists MTN as carrier.
Thanks for pointing out that it's BS though :)

I was looking at the HTC Wildfire /Desire...and while it's a cool devices and have better specs than the BB, the Blackberry just makes more sense in RSA - it's more practical to me. I can actually use the stuff on a day to day basis and my wife will be upgrading to a BB as well at the same time.

Looking at a BB 9700 Bold or the BB Torch 9800, at the moment the Torch is my first choice. I'm just a little concerned that the slide might be a bit fiddly (I have never owned a slide phone before.) i really like the idea of having a touch screen as well as physical KB.

Good good. A friend of mine got the 9800 from me. Stunning little phone but I am not all that gagga for touch and sliding phones. It is great phone, but not for me personally. It is doing very very well in our stores though. I personally still prefer the standard candybar with the full qwerty. Works for me. :-)

HAHA dude I will do that for free and I'm still rolling with a Nokia! ;)

Your store?

here is another person saying no go with Vodacom? Whats up with that?

"USER: Dolby AS per topic, I don't hate BB users.

But when I learn they're on Vodacom, I feel sorry for them. They've got this fantastic handset infront of them with free data, instant messangers, file transfer ... but they're on Vodacom and can't utilise it to it's potential. I got my Blackberry and I believed it to be a 24/7 service like MTN.

I soon learnt it wasn't though and there's around 20% downtime every day. When I'm connected, it takes me around 30 minutes to send a 3MB file. "

...or is he/she just fed up with Vodacom? :D

HEHE.

The company that I work for owns a couple of Vodashops and Chatz Connect stores. I do their stock orders so I see the volumes of Blackberries that we do. It is rather amazing to see the quantities that moves through our stores.

Dolby does have issues with his Blackberry. His problem seems to be localized somehow though. I have had a few times where my BIS service would drop...but a reboot always sorts my problem out. Does not happen often though. :-)

I have a BB on a Vodacom Contract and i have NEVER had any of these issues. you probably find where he is situated Vodacom doesnt have BB service there/he lives in the Bundus!

so i feel he just had a slight issue with Vodacom and is taking the fact he lives in the jungle as a issue (merely speculation here - Prob not a good idea but hey!)

Vodacom + Blackberry in my case no issues AT ALL!

Welcome and thanks to everyone else here :-)

Remember, I want a pic of you klapping a Iphone user! :-)

Will do!
I looked around the office here now and everyone is eaither on an Android phone, Blackberry or Nokia. Not one single Apple user.
Well...I shot a dude with an airsoft rifle in the head on Saturday if that counts? I'll see if he will send a pic of the welt ;)

Didn't physically klap the user, but I did chuck his phone at him (during the Springbok game 2 weeks ago), which he dropped and this was the result - does that count?

In my household there's three BlackBerry users (me, wife and kid) and all three are on different networks (me on MTN, wife on VC and kid on Cell C). The deciding factor is what network has the best reception in the areas you live and work. In my case MTN reception is almost non-existing where I live (so very poor BIS) but good enough at work. MTN used to offer Garmap navigation which I prefer (not sure if they still do) but in general there is no difference ... so it boils down to package price and reception.

As an iPhone and BlackBerry user do I get a light klap as opposed to a snot klap?
