After months, my BIS speed seems alright today?

Speedtest (on the app store) says a ping of 700ms and download of 390kpbs and browsing. I've asked my brother and his seems better too ....

Just want to see everyone else?

/watches thread like a hawk

Considering buying a VC BB 9360. Need it mainly for BBM though not browsing.

512kb test

BIS: ping = 839ms; DL = 267.6 kbps; UL = timed out;
WAP: ping = 249ms; DL = 1.6mbps; UL = 168.4kbps.

So, BIS still sucks donkey's balls.

True, but its a heck of a lot better than it was a week ago. I get quite a lot of emails with attachments that are over 3MB, and a week ago it was taking 20 minutes to download a 3MB attachment. Yesterday and today, maybe 30 seconds. I still don't think I'm going to stay with BB when my contract is up in Feb, but at least its a move in the right direction.

Addition: I got a speed of about 443kbps yesterday - download speeds were kak, though.

I'll try again later and report.

Okay, just did another test (31 January 2012; 11h16):

1,038.961 Kbps; 0.396 second latency; 100KB in 0.77 seconds.

I did that using Opera Mini, though. Would that make a difference?

BlackBerry Browser: 63 Kbps (with "BlackBerry Internet Service 2" service book)

BlackBerry Browser: 123 Kbps (WITHOUT "BlackBerry Internet Service 2" service book)

That would be the speed to the Opera server because of the caching and compression they do first before data gets sent to you.

My requesting has been faster on my BBs since the evening of 29th January.

I actually stopped using them, so it may have been a few days earlier?

The issue for me was never speed as such, it was more the 3-5 minutes 'requesting' of a sitebefore pinging out. Often, I'd require a few attemps to get through to Google or any site. That seems to have improved drastically

Yeah, I also used to have to try a few times before sites loaded.

I have to say that I have noticed a significant improvement in the last few days. Browsing has basically been impossible the last few months, and now it is back to what it used to be. I can actually use my 9780 for more than email and twitter.

I certainly do not get the requesting and time outs that were the norm before.

Well done Vodacom, what have you done to improve it?

Come on Jannievanzyl tell us - this time I am not moaning about Vodacom. I would love to see if Marine1 is also experiencing better service?

My downloads were kak for the past three days. Email attachments of 4MB took over 10 minutes to download. Average speed was about 5 kbps. This morning, I downloaded another attachment and my speed had climbed to the norm for the morning - 130 kbps. Does month end bring throtteling?

Something is going on, and I really cannot understand why they won't give us any information??? I still get time outs etc, but nowhere near as bad as it used to be.

Is it a possibility that Vodacom doesn't have a seperate network allocation for BIS? Is it that they have put aside an allocation (like 2GB, to pull out a stupid number) that is shared by all BIS subscribers, or is it that BIS is provided from the same pool as every other data user under Vodacom's umbrella and BIS is given what's left?

E.g. Vodacom has 5GB (another silly number) and NORMAL data users (Non-BIS) use 4 GB or it, leaving only 1 GB to be shared between the BIS users? Is it possible?

You complain ?

I'm just happy its better.

True... but why haven't companies realized that just keeping quiet about a problem does so much damage to their reputation? Even a one liner saying "we saw a problem and took action"

I'm all for the whole "Don't look a gift-horse in the mouth" thing, but in this case, I WOULD want to know hat the problem was or give me information. That way, I can establish if it's a long-term or short-term problem and can act accordingly. It would also allow me to know if the "solution" is, indeed, a fix or a patch. These will determine how long I stay on this ship.

Crazy example: If they said that the slow BIS was because of oversubscription and they were busy upgrading the network (capital expenditures and new base stations and jazz) and this resulted in glitches when this was rolled out, then I know that the speeds I WAS having for the past 12 months have been addressed and are not likely to be repeated. If I'm 2 months away from my contract ending, that's even MORE valuable to me because it can help me decide whether I want to stay with BlackBerry (and, by extension BIS) or Vodacom, still.

Exactly my situation, my upgrade is next month.

Ye... I take the potty training Dad approach.

"oh well done son you did a big poo ! Now go wipe your bum !"

I have made the long term commitment to BB... that's not going to change anytime soon. So whatever I get in the way of improvements is going to be essential.
