I've been getting horrendous (3-4kbps) download speeds during the day, which then increase to about 10-15kbps at night (00:00-05:00). One or two other people I know with Vodacom BB's (who dont really "dl") are also experiencing slow service. It just us? Is Vodacom going back to what happened in 09?

Vodacom tells me its most likely my device, but charged data and tethering makes it blisteringly fast, and it doesnt explain the increase during low-peak hours.

I just really want to know if I'm alone here, since MTN's recent throttling got people talking, but noone has yet to say anything with vodacom...

:/

Im on voda...
To test im busy downloading msse offline update from microsoft and im getting 120kb-180kb...
Its up and down but doesnt drop below 120kb
During the day it does drop but i dont think im having the same problem as u...
Its currently staying on 158kb

I've been constantly getting between 10-15kbps for the past couple of days on mtn bis, its very irritating

Wonder if I could take it back in then, as I bought it from vodacom early June. Granted its a 8520 but I am WELL aware that EDGE should at least be in the 40-50kbps range. Im really not expecting anything over 100, but at this point, WEB pages time out occasionally during the day. Its just REALLY weird that it goes up again at night...

I used to own an 8520 and to be honest i never saw a difference between gprs and edge...

@Ducy, yeah I heard about that, I was ready to kick Vodacom to the curb and go to MTN BIS when a mate in Gauteng told me rather wait, they're being badly throttled. I guess "rather the devil you know, then the one you don't" applies here..

@hugo69er, meaning...?

Meaning my 8520 always had kak speeds regardless of gprs or edge so i didnt even bother downloading...

Fair enough, but i'm sure even you have to admit that 4 or 5, sometimes 2-3 before timing out is a little more than just kak 8520 speeds. As i said i don't expect blisteringly fast, just what I should be getting. hell i'd be happy with a stable 20 at this point. :(

Yeah, i agree with you... Must be a nightmare to browse as well...
i changed my network settings from 3g to 2g only so now its on edge.
Downloading the same file as earlier...
Getting a max of 6.1kb
Eish!!

I can honestly say that VC edge has always been terrible. I compared my BB on VC EDGE to my cousin's Nokia on MTN EDGE and I was amazed at the speed difference - the Nokia loaded pages.... Well, actually loaded pages!

Its an old problem, i have already complained over a dozen times with vodacom. Eventually the last response i got was insufficient network coverage and they need to erect new towers to handle the sudden burst of users because of berry. They have prioritized non BB users on the network to ensure a high QOS for those who essentially pay them more money, could be months if not years before we see a proper service again and more and more areas will be affected as new BB users enter in.

That and the restrictions is what moved me to android and 3 other friends have replaced their droids with iphones, unlimited EDGE is pretty useless especially as we all have uncapped at home anyway. Ever since i moved to droid i got a nice stable 3G signal when i want it and so far for data i have used about 12mb so far this month, that's less than 1mb per day and i bought a 300mb bundle from my topup airtime.

I am quite happy with my new found freedom.

Poeple, just to clarify.
KB/s = kilobytes per second

Kbs = kilobits per second

I see both here and MTN thread people are using incorrect abbreviations. Its no big deal but a little confusing.

:D

I did say in the MTN thread that VodAcom will probably try the throttling trick too..hope im wrong tho.

No offense dude, but you probably the only 1 confused, if not the only one that noticed let alone cares about the casing. We all know what they mean weather or not they use KB or Kb, they are after all talking about download speed not connection speed and vodacoms not throttling, they prioritizing, simply put non-BB users, ie there guys with other phones or 3G modems get the highest priority and BB's just get whats left. That's why during business hours and even after hours the networks slow as the non-bb owners continue to use the network. The less non-BB users there are on a specific tower the more bandwidth is available for the bb users.

Right now I'm getting 22KB/s, dl on 3G. Funny thing is I live 100m from my cellular tower, and that sort of speeds is beyond terrible.... As I'm typing i'm downloading, and just peaked at my phone: Download failed. This has to be like the 10th time I've tried to download this file, and it's really becoming a problem.... I do hope that VC will sort out this problem soon..... I first thought that it could be the tower was blocked, but this has been going on for the last 2 days, so I can safely rule out that theory. It's weird that some people are getting high download speeds, and some are getting the bottom of the pile...

We have our office in Helena Heights Somerset West, about 800m from a tower and we have had a lot of problems with out Blackberry we use for support. Also the guys with smart phones have had endless troubles the last 3 weeks.

I've also seen my wifes Blackberry BIS has been very slow the last two days and she is connecting to a tower in Somerset West CBD.

Has vodacom themselves, or any other SP given any sort of comment as to the issue? A friend of mine on Facebook says that the MTN network is also giving issues on BIS, so this could be problem with the network, and not just one SP. It could also be an issue with the networks in certain areas, as other members are reporting good enough download speeds in other areas...

Your not alone, i have friends all the way from Stellenbosch to Gordons bay, about 20 or so bb users that have been having this trouble for 3 months already, its just steadily been getting worse. On my android, 3G modem or even with my BB as a modem there are no troubles at all, as soon as i am on bis im lucky to get 10k download.

Don't worry its not going to be fixed anytime soon, vodacom does not care, took me a dozen calls and 4 complaints on hellopeter before i actually got a response other than "we will send a technician" I got a whole email explaining why the problem is there and how they need new towers and they are planning new towers but have not set a date yet, etc, etc. The few users that are abusing BIS have made it a useless service for the rest and as BIS is not as profitable as normal data especially with those download 8gb+ per month on their BIS, they more than happy to say screw the berry, lets keep our actual paying clients happy.

craigavon.
29Kbps on voda bis edge...
not bad i think..

Well its rather reassuring to know I'm not the only EDGE BIS Vodacom user experiencing this. Really contemplating switching to MTN then, since a flatline throttled 15kBYTESps is better than this. Also made a few hellopeter complaints, was told a great number of things. Its not even worth my time to try dl anything during the day,it just fails.
