Okay well I haven't reset my stats for about 10 months
also iPhone

Messages received: 26 802

Media bytes sent: 65.6mb
Media bytes received: 41.7mb

Message bytes sent: 9.8mb
Message bytes received: 20.9mb

So I don't understand how many messages he could've sent

I'd say it could be a faulty simcard that sends say 80% of the msg and then the simcard/network terminates the connection causing Whatsapp to resend it again and again until its sent.
