Maybe it would be, but isn't the Blackberry charged at a flat rate including data transfer?

Of course yes, but my point was that network operators might prefer the more lean & mean data transferer application as it would scale much better in an environment where there are millions of customers using the network...

True, guessing the network operators like an email address they can lock you into though too, although I guess they could always emulate the Google app.
 
Blackberry pre-paid?

Dear Bwana,

I think we have talked in other threads. I recently arrived to the country and went to vodacom to sign up for Blackberry service. Now they tell me I must have a bank account and proof that I have been a resident for 3 years!!!! LOL Yeah, no wonder the thing hasn't taken off... Anyway, is there pre-paid service?

So I guess it is available on prepaid - go to a vodacom shop and see what they say. Those requirements you mentioned seem kind of harsh - I dont think they'd apply just to a blackberry contract though.

All the more reason inform consumers that GMail is a much better option for emails :).

@bwana, what happened to GMail in your forum signature? :(

As it happens their blackberry interface allows you to set your own "reply to" and "from" address so lock in really isnt an issue.

The email address is so clumsy anyway - @mobileemail.vodafonesa.co.za :eek:

True, I think an even better option is to get your own domain and then use Google Apps for your domain to get Gmail that way, then you're not even locked into Gmail:)
 
I'd have to rethink my desire for a Pearl if Apple launches an iPhone with Blackberry connect. :)

2007 is 365 days. So it can be a while before the space start to change.

Only rumors that I have heard is that BIS 2.1 will be implemented sometime in 2007, probably again only a half the stuff, and that we may see the Pearl in the first 6 months of 2007. But as bwana said there are other devices coming to the market with Blackberry capabilities.

If things stay on track, you shouldn't have to wait too long into 2007.

BIS 2.x is a BIG improvement on BIS 1.8 and will address a number of present issues and among other things, should make integration with existing mailboxes much easier and simpler and more managable.

The pearl is nice, although I am more of a QWERTY person myself, and while I thought I wouldn't like the trackball (pearl) ... I have to admit that its very nifty and I could give up my trackwheel in favour of that. :D

And yes, there are more things than you've heard if you count the whole of 2007 ;)

At the moment on BIS you are forced to use the Vlive browser. You can not open or download anything on Blackberry’s website as you get the following error message - see below. Will it be fixed in BIS 2.1??

iirc, there are some changes to the browsing side of things, but don't quote me on that since my memory on that is a bit fuzzy.

What are you trying to install, there is usually more than one way to achieve something on a BB?

For example, instead of installing the Google Talk client OTA, you could do it via your web browser and USB cable. Version 4.2 of the Desktop Manager sees it the same as an OTA installed app and will include it in backups, etc.

Unfortunately to install you often need to be both a windows user and run MSIE - neither of which I enjoy doing.

Yep I got past the google one. But some of the software and games are only accessible through Blackberry's website which I can not access. Very frustrating if the rest of the world can do it.
 
Unfortunately, there is no other way right now .... but BIS 2.1 will fix this for you.
