Vodacom Contract or prepaid?

This is a general question not specific to Vodacom, currently I am with Vodacom but MTN seems more dependable in my area.

My contract is up, I have bought a Iphone 6 cash so I am not concerned with upgrading, currently I use around R1700 a month on my contract. This month cost me just over R2500.

In a recent discussion with a Vodacom call centre agent he recommended I move my line to prepaid as I can save a fair amount every month, he was very convincing so hence my question.

Who to go with? I am leaning towards the MTN Sky package at R999 prepaid and then loading a Afrihost data bundle on the sim, I shoudl be all in at R1200 with unlimited calls and a couple gb of data.

Any recommendations? I may be travelling across the border, is prepaid limiting for roaming?

MTN have better per second rates on prepaid. Anyone who goes with a Vodacom open contract is brave or stupid due to out of broadband rates. I find their data coverage to be comparable. I've been to three or four small towns where MTN data coverage was satisfactory.

Banking with FNB, and being on MTN prepaid, I haven't paid cash for airtime in months due to ebucks.

And on roaming with MTN prepaid, cut off all incoming calls or your airtime will disappear.

You can get a rate of 79c per minute (per second billing) on Vodacom prepaid. This is what I use.

Not sure that you can beat that with contract.

Thanks for the input guys, I think in the end I need to find out who offers the best coverage where I end up working. At this stage it may be Zanzibar so I need to investigate that.

I suppose if I am on prepaid I can port across networks if needed, I wonder if there are limits to porting?

This is the reason I am no longer on contract. That and Vodacom do not stock my phone.

Jola, the vodacom site shows R1,20 per minute as the cheapest, how did you get the 79c per minute option ?

The unlimited sky package is pretty good as it offers unlimited calls, sms and comes with 10GBs of data. Enough even for me on mobile.

They hide it away, use *111# and look for it.

I don't think that they really want people to use this, but it is there.

Vodacom is not playing fair with the 79c rate. They don't make it permanent like MTN so their promo will expire end of March 2015 I think it was.

The once you switch to the 79c price plan you forfeit ANY on net bonuses. Very sneaky from them to do this because it means no matter what price plan you are on they will still make their money.

Not with Vodacom no. They know people that take advantage of the power hour and power bundle for cheap on net calls will need to call other networks eventually and thus they will make their money when they do. Same with the people changing to the 79c deal. If you make a call or calls to other vodacom numbers for a pro longed period then they will make money too because they are charging your 79c for those calls.

You can't win. Vodacom just want people to think you are winning but you really aren't
