hey guys,

can anyone please help me, how do i change the apn to vdata?

Step by step please.

R2/MB is way too much

please please please,

I got the virgin sim and have a globetrotter 3G card

thanx

Create a GPRS-only profile [i.e from the dash's top menu it's Profiles -> New] .

Go through the wizard ,name it say "Virgin GPRS Only" , then just go next-next-next till youre done. Once you're done, then go back to the same menu on the dash and EDIT the profile : Profiles -> Edit ...and select the one you just created.

The same wizard will appear, go next-next again..you will see new config options onwards , one of which is the APN.

Change it to "vdata" [default will be "internet" ].

Alternately, you can skip a step by simply editing your Vodacom Profiles [if you created a GPRS-only one] and changing the APN.

Thats how you do it via the dash. There's also a more technical way to do it via the Modem Settings [Network Connections] once you created a profile....but i'll leave that for someone else as i haven't bothered ;)

thanx diabolus,

got it working at last,

i can now connect, but the pages just says, connection to server lost/reset , something like that

is there something else i must change?

thanx for the info

If it connects fine [as in you clicked "connect" on the dash and it connected giving a message like "connected at 1.8mbps etc] then there's a few reasons:

Most common

1. Welcome to Virgin internet, where the connection is pretty much as stable as a bowl of jelly. You also get this if the connection is very slow [also a common feature] . Usually disconnecting and reconnecting a few times helps.
--> There's also some issues with specific websites at times , try different sites.

2. Not enough credits on your sim . If you ran out of cash it will actually connect but won't open any pages.

3. Firewall and proxies [internet settings in your browser] that are wrong. [i.e. if you used a proxy [usually from work] and forgot to remove it ] .

Oh just on a side hint, MTN got prepaid bundles with which you can at least get 3G/HSDPA without paying R2 p/MB . Nice typical bundle is the 350MB @ R220 = 62c p/MB .

So it is useful to also give that a go too, Virgin isn't as reliable as one would hope [both in terms of speed and keeping the connection alive]

thanx for the info diabolus, will gave a look again, my vodacom is connecting fine without any problems.

If you were using the vlive! APN and not the internet APN, you must disable your proxy in Internet Explorer and then any other browser you may want to use.

hi edwe,

i've been using the internet apn all along, no proxy settings changed in IE or firefox

Not sure if this is relevant, but remember you must make a billable call with your virgin sim, in a phone, before it will work in a card.

If you try before making a billable call, you will connect but no data will flow.

cool dave, didnt know that, will have a look and see, thanx alot for the info
