There seems to be some confusion (in another thread) on what the compression is and how to use it. I thought to rather start a new thread on this.

Most ISP's use this technology for good reason, including MWEB and MTN to improve service levels. Vodacom also uses such a system on their GPRS and 3G networks.

The data compression system consists of a server somewhere in the Vodacom network (close to the Internet access point) and a client on your laptop, the Vodafone dashboard.

Data compression will attempt to squeeze the packets coming down to you so that you get a higher effective throughput. I've seen 500Kb/s doing FTP on some occasions on my datacard! This can only be good, I got more than what I paid for.

Another thing the data compression server does is to do IP management for you. It'll keep TCP/IP sessions alive (at the server side) that otherwise might have timed out and would require a reconnect on the client which slows you down and eat more bandwidth.

Often when you browse the web, you end up on pages with large numbers of graphics and pictures. These take a long time to download and obviously eat into your 1G. Most of the time you don't need the graphics or at least don't need them in a highres format.

The data compression server will dynamically recompress these graphics into a lower res format and insert it into the web page. The result is you get a faster download, use less of your 1G but still see the page, albeit with 'crappy' looking pictures.

The only downside of this is sometimes you might want the highres version. In this case you just reload the picture required with 'shift-R'. This will download that spesific graphic again.

You can easily work out that it's much better to download 99% of web content compressed and then reload the few you want uncompressed. The nett result will always be a bandwidth saving.

If you don't want this feature, you can easily turn it off on your dashboard under Tools->Options->Programs->Compression. Now your graphics will load normally but you download the full page size.

I would like to see a more sophisticated client on the dashboard that will allow me more control over the compression settings, for example turrn of jpg recomression per URL. So if you browse web sites with lots of pictures ;) and you want them highres the first time, you can do so.

How about it Vodacom3G?

Does Vodacom charge on the compressed or uncompressed bandwidth used?

All this compression talk at faster speed offers no miracle for the pricetag of the bandwidth on 3G. It all comes down to, now you download faster and hit your 1gig limit faster to go over it and pay more.

That's a silly statement!

Don't confuse compression with caps on bandwidth. They're two separate issues. Even if there was no cap, you'd still want compression.

Would you rather have a 56Kb/s connection and wait 3 times longer for the same page to download?

You don't go onto the INTERNET with the intention to do 10Mb's worth of browsing, you go on the INTERNET to do some work and if that entails browsing a number of sites, that's what you do. You have no control over what the webmaster decided to do with that page, i.e. how big it is. You just want to view it. If you can use less bandwidth to do so, that's good.

Compression will allow you to browse more sites, faster for the same amount of money.

If you'd like to work slower for the same amount of bandwidth and download less as a result, just turn it off!

1Gb of COMPRESSED data

The 1Gb data cap is measured on the COMPRESSED data, that is the data that flows across the 3G data network. The user therefore sees an advantage in that not only is the connection faster but a higher effective data cap is provided.

If the compression rate is 20% on average, you would have downloaded an effective 1.2Gb of data, from the web, before you reach your 1Gb limit.

Disabling compression in the vodafone software DOES NOT WORK!

It is pointless for those of us that make a living from pics/graphics.

Disabling the compression in the dashboard will turn off the client-server compression algorithms but not the client-less ones. Thus you will still get jpg recompression.

Vodacom is busy addressing this on two fronts for those customers who prefer no compression at all.

1. In the short term a solution will be implemented to allow 3G web access without any compression. As soon as the details are finalised, they will be published here. Before week end, at the latest.

2. In the longer term, a new dashboard client will be made available that will allow much better control over the compression settings.

I'm impressed, for the moment

Hey vodacom3g

Very impressed with the fact that you guys have woken up to this and the other issues and comments on the forum, particularly relating to out-of-bundle data tariffs. Have not seen this kind of responsiveness in SA for a long time.

Now, you need some training for your helpdesk people and to improve answering times.

Also, a big thumbs up to rpm. Viva free speech, viva! :)
