Hi All

I have three vodacom 3g dongles and would like to know if Vodacom lock them to their network. I have an 8ta sim and was thinking of using it with the Vodacom dongles instead buying an 8ta dongle.

Thanks

No they not locked, but Software support is another issue that can be overcome as mentioned above.

Its currently still illegal for SP's in SA to lock hardware to their networks.

On a similar topic, anyone know where I can find upbraided firmware for an R201?

I actually want to attach the dongle to a 3g netgear broadband router. I tested it with the Vodacom dongle and sim and it work without having to load software. Netgear has a list of dongles that is compatible with the router and you upgrade the router firmware for the later dongles. For South Africa they only list Vodacom, MTN and CellC but not 8ta, hence my wanting to use a Vodacom dongle but with my 8ta data sim card. The router detects which dongle it is.

Vodafone software (locking to Vodacom) is not active on routers, hence it is not an issue.
It shoudn't be related to SP either. However some SIMs might be not compatible due to the software embedded on SIM. Post this question on 8ta section or ask moderator to move it.

Just on the offchance that the Vodafone 3G dongle was in fact obtained overseas, it should be noted that the Brits for one, DO still lock their dongles! Before they came down in price here, I made exactly that mistake, buying a Vodafone dongle in the UK which then would not work here.

Just to update. I eventually inserted the 8ta sim into the vodacom dongle, attached it to the netgear router and it worked first time. No hassles whatsoever.
