so i can buy one of these modems for r800.

now is that a good price?

2nd, can you only use this modem with VC, or can I use it with my mtn and VM sims as well?

3rd do you need any s/w with it, as i'll only get the modem and the usb cable

R800 is about average for a second hand E220, the cheapest I've seen on gumtree is R700.

The best thing to do is to check with another SP sim to see if it is Network locked. I dont know if VC supplied these modems with a network lock at some stage but the E620 def came with the lock. It is possible to unlock the card if it is network locked, but it is a hastle and takes ages to get a code or to send it in to get it unlocked at VC.

You can use the normal Windows (assuming thats what you use) dialup with correct parameters if you have the drivers for the modem. Otherwhise you can just download the Mobile Partner software which is way smaller than the VMC software.

*Here is the dowload location at Huawei

Vodacom E220's were never locked but there was an issue at one point with MTN 64K SIMs on this modem. Probably been resolved by now on MTN's side.

I PM'd you your unlock code BTW.

so 800 is a reasonable price...

...i can't even test it with another sim, as i'll be buying from a friend of a friend.
my mtn sim is a 32k sim anyway, if i remember correctly.

but thx for all the info

as i need something like this, as if i continue using my current phone as a modem, i'll be broke before long - atleast with this i can use pre-paid and also get hsdpa

i decided against buying the 2nd e220 as i see they brand-spanking new ones for r999...

...so is it as easy as me buying a prepaid data bundle for a sim, and then making a connection through the pc as normal?

new q: is it worth paying this extra money for a hsdpa device, or just getting a 2nd sim and using it on my 3g phone?

Where can you get a new one for R999?

You buy airtime for the sim and then convert it to a data bundle (R189 = 500MB), Vodacom I convert using the vodacom4me website and MTN by dialing 141

If you have a spare 3g phone then I would say use that, otherwise its gonna become a shlep to swap sim cards the whole time...

Hi Spartaniz

I got my self a E272 from Gogga Connect, and its really faster than the E220
I did some test and becoz its a HSUPA my upload speed was +-1100kbps
If you get a E220 your max up is gona be like 360kbps but down will be the same.
Nice thing about the E272 is it also has an little plug for external aerial which the E220 doesnt have.

Gogga Connect is selling the E272 for R1999 cash price with out a contract.
