To paraphrase: although consumers may see a price adjustment in the future, price reductions will not immediately be on the cards.

MTN has 135km of fibre in Gauteng Metro, which will go live in September.

Voda has networs in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth and Bloemfontein, going live by July.

This is fantastic news for these companies, but really bad news for telkom.

These new communication networks put Vodacom and MTN (but particularly Vodacom) in position to completely eliminate the need for telkom.

Telkom have decided to start playing the mobile game, but I think that they are coming in far too late.

If vodacom and provide a low-latency and reliable service on their HSDPA offerings, then ADSL is as good as dead, and I suspect that their inability to provide low-latency is a side effect of being forced to purchase network space from an already conjested telkom / uunet / whomever.

I repeat, this is fantastic news!

How will the capital, monitoring and maintenance cost of all this fibre be passed onto us, the consumer? I doubt whether it will be completely offset by the savings generated by not having to lease backhaul from Telkom. This is business - nothing for nothing, especially in RSA!

These are 'internal' networks used to connect base stations, corporate buildings and gated communities.

So you find 'pricing' on these rings.
