I have an HSDPA handset and I get full HSDPA coverage at my current location.

Fine...now if i had to log onto mxit using my mobile i recently found out that it switches to 3G only. While if i had to connect to the internet on the pc it would go to HSDPA (3.5G).

On the phone itself iv tired general browsing using the phone's web browser (3G only) as soon as I click to download a file it switches to (3.5G - HSDPA)

So in other words HSDPA connections are made when ever im downloading on mobile/ using the phone as a modem. This never happen before if it was on 3.5G it would download, mxit everything on that mode. The other network HSDPA on my phone works normally.

Not to say its a problem its just funny:)

I've noticed on the data cards that when the connection is idle it will show 3G and only shortly after starting to download data will it switch to HSDPA, after the data is transferred and the connection is idle again it drops back to 3G.

Perhaps mxit traffic is not enough to trigger the switch to HSDPA.

Must be a mechanism to save battery power, HSDPA (as 3G vs GPRS) must use more battery power, why have a more power hungry protocol running for 'nothing'.

Yes you are right also mxit traffic is hardly a blimp on the radar and can run perfectly on GPRS so no need for HSDPA speed during cybersex :D. High speed Internet comes at a cost on a mobile BATTERY LIFE PEOPLE
