Vodacom launches Wi-Fi at Loftus

The solution is the first step in making Loftus Versveld Africa’s first truly ‘smart’ stadium, the operator said.

Hardly. All the stupid in the stands will balance it to just slightly below primary school level.

OT:
“Instead, data will be drawn directly from a customer’s existing data allocation, making the connection and usage process simple. Non-Vodacom customers will also be able to buy Wi-Fi bundles to gain access,” said Delport.

This is interesting. Using your data allocation via wifi.

Is there really a need for very good broadband at stadiums. I can imagine people using a lot of data during test cricket, but a rugby game should really hold everyone's attention for 90 min. Or is it all to cope with the few minutes before kickoff and during half time?

Once again Vodacom is on top of their game. I like the idea that Vodacom plans to roll this concept out to high density areas like malls.

Looks like it from the stats. Lots of data usage.

The interesting stat is that uploads are now as high as downloads. All those selfies, likely.

They should be rolling out this in other high density places like malls, casinos, entertainment, Gautrain (station & train.. Hey this is over due by yrs) venues etc. Heck with WiFi calling you can get your voice calls that way too..

Is it just me or are things in telecom space on a go slow lately? Like a few yrs back it happen fast but lately adoption of new coverage strategies and imp takes long.

In these scenarios the same two limiting factors keep on popping up; spectrum and permission to install. Including the fast rail system.....been trying for years.

Look at how quickly we normally demo the new technologies on the network, but then it takes forever to get to the greater public.
