Hi guys
sorry to ask what might be a stupid question but do voda live tv customers require a tv licence Being a TV & Video repair dealer in KZN and plagued by SABC to provide and adhere to certain licence requirements ( wish I could send um my rejected sales reports because of no licence ) Believe me this subject is becoming W-I-D-E open

I used to sell tellies and lost hundreds of sales because people didn't have TV licenses. Some people almost ****ed me up because of it.

There was something recently about the UK requiring a TV licence for mobile TV, I suppose the BBC must be running low on funds or something...

What I do know about SA's TV Licensing requirements|regulations|whatever, is that a device that has a builtin tuner, requires a TV license - regardless of whether the device or the tuner are actually being used by the owner. AFAIK mobile phones do not have builtin TV tuners, and I reckon they shouldn't need a TV licence, but I'm sure the SABC would want to have the regs changed to somehow justify the SABC's continued existence...

That was my first thought as well, but if you think about it they could easily get round that one.

Say, if I have a DSTV decoder and a TV(that is a tv that does not have a tuner - just RCA video line in - many exist). The SABC has succesfully claimed in the past that this setup requires a license. The decoder is recieving digital mpeg2 streamed video over radio, and this makes it count as a tv reception device.

So if you follow that logic, according to these laws the buggers can actually force cell phone users to have a license, because we too are capable of recieving digital streamed video. :(

I tend to agree with 3gmac the current requirement is any device ( working or not ) capable of receiving a television picture off air This includes Tv's ( not monitors ) Vcr's M-net decoder's DSTV decoders and DVD recorder's As a dealer I think I'll ask the Idiots at Auckland Park but getting a reply let alone an intelligent answer could be a miracle in itsself Will advise when reply is recieved and another point if your phone / data card is " capable " of TV reception even if you don't subscribe to a service do you need a licence ?

If you guys are querring the DVB-H phones, they DSTV approved so the licence is free, DSTV has SABC to, so no need to worry!:D

Well the phones (with streaming) does not need a licence as it recieves the information over the internet and does not have a tuner, but DVB-H is a concern to me, BUT i see it as the problem of the providers... not the consumer
