a friend of mine cancelled a data contract with vodacom which included a K3805-z. understandably the data sim has been blocked, but since then the modem refuses to work, its not even detectable by the operating system.

when i plug it in, red light flashes and the virtual cd drive pops up and shows the setup/driver files. even when i try to run the setup exe file, i get a corrupt error message.

i've tried this on numerous computers. in the past i have been able to bypass the vmc software loaded on it and use another sim. but now i suspect that the dongle could be blacklisted as they do with lost or stolen phones. but can blacklisting leave the device completely non-operational?

Yes.

Though a bit odd. If the contract is finished/paid up the unit belongs to him. Should at the very least work with a sim from the same network.

the contract included a laptop and the modem. He cancelled the contract after a year as he could not afford it any more. i don't think he has finished paying it up. even if it blacklisted, what is puzzling is that the unit is completely undetectable when plugged into usb. i have never known a blacklisting to be able to shutdown the entire functioning of the hardware, be it a modem or a cellular phone.

Not blacklisted. Sounds like the modem is broken or a driver issue.

i've tried various things, trying to reinstall the vmc software or delete drivers, but there is very little i can do to attempt to troubleshoot when the modem is undetectable by the system.

anyone have any ideas?
