Vodacom/MTN/Cell C data just too expensive

I have had Vodacom HSDPA data for the last few years because I have to work from home a lot. After I have seen the Telkom/8ta data rates I immediately cancelled my contract and jumped on the band-wagon. I was scared at first that the signal would be weak and the administration would be tedious but other than the fact that they cant send my invoice to email I am happy.

Why cant these big companies like Vodacom and MTN offer these tipes of data rates. For the same price I am getting 20 times more data. Is Telkom actually monopolizing the market with their data rates? Why would one choose less data for more money?

Anticompetition 101:

Big rich company starts a small subsidiary in a market it previously didn't trade
Small company sells product below cost, subsidised by big company
Small company grows, small companies competitors go bust
Small company dominates market then sets prices at whatever level it feels like
Big rich company wins, incumbents lose, consumers lose.

But nobody would ever suspect Telkom of doing something like that, so it's all academic anyway.

They're horrendously expensive - but the really confusing to me, is that every quarter they post huge profits and have even more subscribers than the quarter before. They're many 100% more than competition, but some perhaps some don't realise?

Just about every single post on here is just waiting to cancel their Vodacom subscription when it's over. Some people have multiple contracts and simply gritting teeth and waiting to leave the company.

I've been wanting to start a poll for a while on who is leaving, but I've always thought the thread would get deleted.

Maybe now is the time try

Looool.... All I know is that telkom is incapable of providing us with ADSL, due to cable theft.
We had ADSL from mid 2005 to mid 2007, but since then, BLEH, life has been a nightmare thanks to these freaks.

They need to flood the market with providers. Handing licences out to every Tom Dick and Harry of a network provider that want to setup camp in SA. MTN not worried about SA as they got half of Africa using them and some other parts of the world. We are just small fish in a big pond.

1) Where do you think the spectrum will come from?
2) Most countries end up settling around 3-4 mobile operators with a number of virtual operators running on top of them. Have a look at Europe for instance: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mobile_network_operators_of_Europe
3) How many people do you think have the cash to setup an entire network and compete in what's starting to become a rather saturated market? 8ta sure isn't picking up tens of thousands of customers a month.

What's more viable (as mentioned by a few delegates at MBB2011) is a wholesale model for mobile operators which will allow the smaller players to offer innovative solutions and be competitive.

Once again you are showing no understanding of the technology or the market.

Vodacom is the one that is expensive, MTN has got uncapped Internet now from R229 per month with a modem on contract (not sure if they are going to have their massive shaping after February 2012 when their summer promo ends).

Ya 8ta is very cheap Im thinking of moving my cell phone number there. Is 8ta's 3G and HSDPA Network as Good as Vodacom or MTN or is it as Terrible as Cell C?
