Vodacom network coverage: 1994 vs 2014

3G network covers 91 percent of the population? Ha ha

Yeah I just can't see it.... That effectively means that only 9% does not have 3G coverage..... This is a tricky claim to make.

Would love to know how they get to this claim . Complete rubbish imo

Yeah I don't know how they can factually make that claim unless they have physically tested where each and every person lives to calculate percentages. Making assumptions on how many people might live in a particular 3G covered area would result in very inaccurate stats and claims from their side.

Since the split... at least R25 billion.

well said :)
Of course it isn't proper for Vodacom to give Telkom back that money - because lets face it Telkom collected that revenue and passed on the costs - but rather it should be put into public fixed line infrastructure ...

It's interesting to look at the coverage map in 1994 because at the time I wasn't even aware that there was a cellphone network. I only got my first cellphone in 1998 like a lot of other South Africans I suspect. From 1994 to 1998 cellphones were usually only the preserve of yuppies.

Would be interesting to see see a year-on-year progression of how the network coverage has increased from 1994 to 2014.

What I dont get is how the network spend is so high yet the quality had deteriorated so much, in the major cities. Jhb for example.
Been with Vodacom since the start, they moved us from the Siemens portable phones over to VC when it started.
Another thing that is quite funny is you may well show H+ or 3G but the actual speeds are anything but that.
I have been doing random speed tests especially on the M1/ N1 and you are lucky to get over 1 meg speeds.

From what I understand, the quality has deteriorated because the growth rate in mobile device usage has far out paced the ability of the networks to add capacity.

There is also a difference between signal and bandwidth. You may have full signal because you are in a place that is well covered by a cellular base station or tower but that does not mean that that tower has enough capacity in terms of data bandwidth to actually give you decent throughput. It's a bit like having 20 people in your house all using your 1 Mbit ADSL - They will all have great WiFi signal but their ability to get much from the 'net will be severely diminished.

Or passed on to smaller operators the same way Vodacom got it,Asymmetry.

Vodacom doesn't want to subsidise CellC ...
- because that is "unfair" ...

there are ways which it can be passed through in a manner that ensures investment rather than creating perverse incentives.

And still there are some parts of Jbg running 2g, this 91% claim is ....

Why test 3G speed on the highway?
There is data connectivity on the highway but it's not a given. Most data coverage is around resident and business areas and not on the highways.
Voice is available on the highway with one or two dead spots.

Oh and 1 or 2 dead spots? I can name about 10 from rivonia towards the Glen

Yip there would be more towards Kempton and the airport.
Also parts of the highway with a steep decline.
