Hi,

Does anyone know if Vodacom broadcasts the time to our cellphones ... ?

I can set my phone to either 'set to local network time' or not - but neither makes a difference. Just curious if this is my phone, or the network doesn't do it?

Thanks

I've wondered about this myself ... I don't think the network actually broadcasts it, but I might be wrong.

Any killer reason it should be on?

Overseas visitors roaming on your network from different time zones benefit from the automatic adjustment to GMT +2?

Works well when I go overseas on some of the foreign networks - the phone updates the date and time automatically, and re-adjusts all your appointments, meetings etc. without you having to do a thing - nice and convenient!

Suppose it would help those who don't set their clocks and calenders on their phones too?

I've always wondered about this, but from what I can tell, it doesn't seem to work.

My phone (Nokia 6600) seems to lose time fairly quickly ... so means resetting the time every couple of weeks for me :(

My main reasoning is because my phone often freezes and needs to have the battery taken out to restart it (too many 3rd party apps I guess ..) Anyway, because of this it's always 15-20 minutes too slow, and that messes up all other schedules/tasks/alarms etc.

I was going to bring up the overseas thing as well. That is probably the best and a very valid reason as well. We went to Greece a few weeks back and my collegues loved the fact that it updated the time automatically. Unfortunatley, they had to manually set the time again when returning to overseas visitors.

I *think* they even received "Welcome" SMSs when they switched the phones on at the airport.

That was my experience on a trip to the UK in 2001. Automatic time update and a welcome message. It confused me totally as I was expecting the time on my phone to be wrong compared to the local time.

I'll be sure to test it again at the end of this year (if I remember of course) :)

The welcome messages are pretty standard. I can only remember getting an time update on one network in one country, travelling across Europe recently so it's not that widely deployed.

My Blackberry updates the time whenever I remove and replace the battery. But I don't do this often as it takes ages to boot up. I don't think it is synchronising with network time though, I suspect it is synchronising with the BES server.

Does MTN do it? I do recall my previous phone (T610) asking me if it could update the time sometimes when I switched it on. Imate Jam does not do that however, but I guess I could setup ntp over gprs.

Been 18 months since I created this thread ... got a new phone with the SAME hassle ;) Does it happen yet?

It's such a simple feature and would be great if all phones automatically got the correct date/time etc from the network.

It should be routine to transmit the right time. If the satellite boxes can do it, why can't the networks.

Vodacom will prob make us pay for such a service anyway....
