In the last 2-3 weeks my Samsung i780 has had HUGE issues with dropping calls and intermittant black outs in a conversation. Generally, 90 percent of calls are dropped between 1 and 4 minutes - without fail.

I thought (still do tbh - but just checking here) that the phone is at fault and sent it for software/firmware reset. The first call after getting it back was ... 23 seconds. The person phoned back and we lasted 1.30 this time. Basically its the same.

I've since heard everyone has had more call dropping etc in the last few weeks (not to my extent though). Could the network have something to do with it?

Could be, where are you and have you found this in different locations?

But first see if you can set your phone to 2G only and see if it makes a difference.

Calls can potentially be dropped if you switch between two different elements. For example:

1) The phone hands over to another tower and there is no capacity on the new tower.
2) Switching between 2G and 3G.

But I've seen the same problem with some handsets when they handover between 2G and 3G, i.e. the handset will drop the call.

I had this problem yesterday morning about 10h00 with my 3G E220 modem - it was dropping the 3G line every 1-4 minutes - I tried different settings on the dashboard, "3G Only", "3G Preferred", etc, but I gave up after a couple of hours of that and only tried again later last night, which seemed to work fine again - seems to be a network issue...

Hi V3G,

At home and work (Randpark Ridge and Paulshof).

I made a phone call out from Cresta and Melrose specifically to check - yet it worked perfect. I kept both people on the line for about 7 minutes before I hung up. As mentioned, at home I battle to go beyond 4 minutes a conversation :/

When someone did try contact me at home, I phoned themn back from my brothers Nokia (after 3 disconnects from mine in 10 minutes) and it was perfect. That's what makes me think the Samsung has anissue with holiding onto calls when reception may be slightly low.

howardb : it's actually with voice alls ,but you make a good point about data now. My 3G is running perfectly at home ;) Better than it has been in the past.

3G/HSDPA network totally independant of voice? Could the improved 3G and dimished voice be related (like QoS to data, perhaps)?

THanks

Voice also run over 3G, so if your phone hands the voice call over from 2G to 3G or the other way, it could be causing the drop.

So, see if you can force the phone to 2G only and test that setup. Got a sneaky suspicion it might be your problem.

My TYTN was permanently on 2G to get around this same problem. The handset could not handle the handover while on an active voice call.
