@VD:
I'm hoping you can help, a friend of mine recently ported to Vodacom on my recommendation and got an iPhone 3GS on contract. I've helped him as far as I can with getting onto vodacom4me, getting a Data SIM and purchasing SMS and data bundles, but he's run into a couple of things I couldn't help him with.

Firstly, his phone didn't seem to come set up for MMS and tethering, is there anywhere on the Vodacom website where he can find the official settings?
Can he get the settings sent to his phone using the *111# menu?

Secondly, the SMS 300 bundle isn't listed as an option on the vodacom4me site, although I know you can purchase one telephonically.

Vodacom
MMSC: mmsc.vodacom4me.co.za
Proxy: 196.006.128.013:8080
APN: mms.vodacom.net

Also, I think the Iphone APN needs to be activated. Not sure if the normal "internet" one will work on the phone. If you want to use the normal "internet" one then you might have to change this manually on the phone settings.

300 SMS bundle is available on my system to activate....cost is R67.50. Not sure why it is not on 4me.

Vodacom

Thanks, and the tethering settings? Isn't there a page on Vodacom's site I can point him to with instructions or a download?

I think this would have been done when he took out the contract.

@VD: Any ideas?

mmm what is this tethering thingy majiggy? (blush)

Going to PM you with my contact number. Tell you friend to phone me and I will activate it for him/her telephonicaly.

Using the phone as a modem.

You can use the internet APN on the iPhone, but after a firmware update it will default to iphone.vodacom.za so just get the APN activated (if it was not done automatically).

So while we are on the MMS and Tethering topic, what is the deal? My understanding is that the cell providers are supposed to send Apple their settings for deployment via iTunes, but it's been a few months since OS 3.0 was launched and still nothing. Why do users have to resort to manually enterting settings?

Thanks for the offer, he has already call the helpdesk and had the SMS 300 bundle loaded.

It turns out it wasn't done automatically. He's going to call helpdesk again for that.

Ginggs, is my help not good enough for you :-( hehe. Regarding the Iphone APN, did he get sorted? One of my clients that ported from MTN last week had a big problem getting the APN activated. I only got it sorted yesterday. In the meantime, he can use the normal "internet" APN untill his Iphone APN gets sorted.

Hope you come right.

It's nothing personal, I do appreciate your offer of help but you shouldn't have to fix these things for individuals, they should be fixed by Vodacom for everyone.
  • Why isn't the iphone APN provisioned as a matter of course for every iPhone sold?
  • Why aren't the MMS and tethering settings available through iTunes, or the Vodacom website, or the *111# "Device setup" menu?
  • Why isn't the SMS Bundle 300 available on vodacom4me for contract users?
(It turns out my wife reported this to the helpdesk months ago and although they activated it for her, they didn't do anything about getting it fixed.)

Yes he did thanks, this is what I ended up sending him:
  1. Call Vodacom helpdesk and ask them to provision your number for the iphone APN
  2. Change your APN to iphone.vodacom.za and check that you can surf
  3. Go to this page (on your iphone) and click on the 'Get "iphone.vodacom.za" tethering' button
  4. Go to this page (on your computer) and follow the Vodacom MMS instructions
  5. After rebooting your phone and checking that the settings have "stuck", send an MMS to anyone (Vodacom then detects you have an MMS capable device and enables MMS reception)

I find this thread very interesting... I've read a lot of stuff here that I didn't know :(

First off, what's this whole thing about calling helpdesk to activate provision on my current number for my iphone APN?

I've ordered my iPhone, don't have it yet. Do I need to call vodacom once I get my iPhone to have my number activated for the iPhone? Please explain... also, I'm on pre-paid, will that be a problem?

Thanks guys!

Thanks a lot. Can a pre-paid number be added to the APN? I have a pre-paid number and a contract number, can both be added to the APN?

Shot!

ok ..... lol .... when I try the steps that is described on : http://wan.to/iphone/

I get the "Could not Activate cellular data network: you are not subsribed to a cellula data service" message ..... guess I'll go back to my APN of internet again .....
