Vodacom / Open Access

Discussions have begun. But very early stages and won't happen this year. No guarantee it will happen, I should add...

So judging by the lack of reply's I take it that if our estate has Vodacom FTTH we are stuck with Vodacom as a ISP? Do Vodacom actually have any agreements with any other ISP's at the moment? Im not keen to get stuck with a single ISP

I have not found any ISP that can confirm that they currently have a agreement with Vodacom.

However no can is willing to deny that they could in the future provide service on Vodacom network.

At the moment it's still to early, I suspect you'll have to use Vodacom for 2 years and by then there will be providers to choose from, only time will tell.

Bummer, then it is better to go with Telkom FTTH in this estate as pretty much every ISP can be used on that. Why would you go the Vodacom route anyhow?

They'll punt on-net services but I'm not convinced on the consumer value yet. To be honest a decision on fibre last mile provider should be based on 3 macro factors: 1) last mile technology used; 2) scalability and ability for ISPs to offer very high speed services over the network without jumping through major hoops (serious cost implications here. Think IPC at 1Gbps or faster) Provisioning should be quick and easy. Vuma don't make this as easy for ISPs as it should be; 3) price and likelihood of benefiting from individual ISP pricing benefits or is it primarily tied to a single provider? I. E will price primarily be dictated to ISPs or are access costs likely to be reasonable?

Can post a fair amount about this, but wait on some news releasing soon for now... ;)

As far as anyone can tell
1. Yes you are stuck with Vodacom as ISP
2. No agreements or services from other ISPs that the users on this forum could find except for their claim to be "open".

The best option is not to sign up, and explain to others why they should sit this one out.

You have my response via PM.

Sorry a bit off topic..Vodacom also says "soft-cap" 50GB, does this mean they charge you out-of-bundle when you go over 50GB or do they cap you and you got to choose to buy a top up.

I could see some very nasty surprises if you on 100Mbps and you get infected, hope they cap people.

They drop you speed to the 1/10 e.g 100mbps becomes a 10mbps connection. To get full speed again you can buy a 50GB bundle for R250.

Vodacom is not the best in pricing but not the worst

Hi all,

We (FireStream) are hoping to conclude our open access agreement with Vodacom later today. I will revert once I have further feedback.
Thanks

Getting vodacom fibre installed in the estate (I don't know which idiots agreed to this) hopefully there's some open access soon

We have tried as Cool Ideas to engage with Vodacom, also no luck but we will continue to try and interface with their services. I personally don't think they are interested in providing opportunity to other providers, the longer they put off the competition the longer they sign up desperate consumers into contract terms. And when the ISP deals are concluded we would be forced to be more expensive with their line and network access fees. Open Access as a term gets thrown around but is not realistic with these larger operators, the same as with Telkom at the end of the day with IPC fees.

I doubt Vodacom is interested much in Open Access on their fibre network. Their current data caps are actually ridiculous, if you compare them to what seems to be the average from other competitors (500gb+). If they had to offer open access, not many would use them as an ISP.

I cant imagine many will be signing up with Vodacom, unless they seriously adjust their offerings to actually be competitive and reasonable.

They are coming to the party so it seems like it will happen, that being said they are only now trying to get this going after they have deployed to 5000 homes that people have signed contracts with Vodacom for. So they are now making the scraps available to other ISPs.
