I have a 2GB 3G account in my tablet. I use it for emails and some browsing. I rarely, if ever, go over my 2GB.
For some reason my Google plus auto backup settings changed, I'm not sure how but it was definitely not planned, and all the video and image content on the tablet backed up to Google. I went from an average 2GB per month usage to 17GB in 2 days and an additional R15k added to my bill.
Very expensive mistake that will take me sime time to pay back. Money I can not afford to lose.
This brings me to the point of this post:
Why has Vodacom not implemented some form of irregular and fraudulent use rules engine? If a user goes from averaging 2GB per month for a year and then suddenly goes up to 10 times that alarms should sound and usage should be either blocked or throttled until the user validates the extra usage or buys an additional data bundle. What person in their right mind is going to willingly go so far out of bundle?
Implementing this type of rules engine is not overly complex and is prevalent in the banking industry. I see no reason why it could not be implemented in this type of environment other than the fact that Vodacom will make less money from suckers like me. Or is that exactly the point?
I'd also like to mention the fact that out of bundle costs are rediculous but that has been done to death.
Regards
