Hi. I was wondering about something. I have a huawei usb modem lying around, was thinking of getting a prepaid sim card to use on that as a backup. Will any vodacom prepaid sim work (and give me HSDPA speed), or do I have to get a special "data sim" to use?

Thanks.

i'm not very clued up but I can help you on this on. My children do it. When they want to use my laptop and the internet, they put a prepaid sim card in my Hauwei modem. But it should be a 64K sim. Makes is faster. Put the sim in your cell phone, load airtime, minimum R100, purchase a data bundle, minimum R88 for 75mb, and woola, you are connected

Yes, all you need is a normal prepaid sim card. Once you've got that, you can buy airtime and then convert it into any data bundle you want.

Yes. On contract you have a 60 day rollover. Any prepaid SIM will work, just make sure of the data bundles that are available so that you purchase enough airtime to convert to a bundle. If you're only using it for backup though, maybe you don't need a data bundle. But data is very expensive this way.

Almost any SIM card from Vodacom or MTN or Telkom will work and provide HSDPA speeds if your location falls inside an HSDPA cell coverage area. You will also have access to HSUPA speeds if your modem supports it.

as far as i know, any sim will work--just check that it is not network locked.
If your Huawei modem is network-locked you can get it unlocked within minutes DIY or via a third party, at reasonable prices.

If your modem supports USSD commands you don't have to switch the SIM card back and forth between a cellular phone and the modem.

You can load airtime of almost any amount via most Internet banking facilities and convert it to data bundles at a price of R9.25 per 30MB.*

(R9.25 usually buys you 5MB but the special offer that ends on 31 August gets you 25MB free for each 5MB bundle you buy. This offer could likely be extended - who knows?)

Is unused pre-paid data still forfeited after 30 days?

Unused allocated data (MB) will be carried over up to the last calendar day of the next month.
(In other words: No matter which day of the year you buy a bundle, it will have a lifespan of between 29 days and 60 days before it is forfeit.)

Also:

# Carry-over applies to Broadband Standard, Broadband Advanced and Data Messenger.
# Carry-over will be applied to all customer types from 5 April 2009.
# Customers automatically qualify for carry-over.

Bullsh*t!

Bullsh*t! (Have you been completely offline in the past four-and-a-half months?) :erm:

"Vodacom also allows data bundle carry over for up to a maximum of 60 days for all customers irrespective of the data bundle (Standard or Advanced) chosen."

Thank you D, very informative. All I needed to know.

@ Park@82. From the Vodacom website. "Carry-over applies to Broadband Standard, Broadband Advanced and Data Messenger."

@ "D" I'm really sorry for thinking that it was the case. Thank you so much for pointing it out to me. It's great to be part of a community where people can share information and help other people....especially when they talk "Bullsh*t!"
