Vodacom Problems: Slow Throughput, trying to Connect, DNS, High Latency

Thank you Vodacom for putting me out of work another night of the week last night. This month I lost about 30% of my production hours thanks to your good service. In the mean while I am still waiting (have been for two weeks) for your investigation to come up with results to see why you debited my account with over R600 last month while the invoice was only just over R300.

But even though I can only use your service every now and then for the past 3 weeks, I am sure I will have to pay the full fee this month.

Just for the record, if you phone 155, it takes you ten minutes to figure out which option to select. To send an email to vodacom results in somebody asking you some silly questions and then tell you they will investigate.

Last night at about 20h50 to 21h00 (after which I hit the computer with a hammer and went to bed) I had no data transfer.

From the screenshot below you can see that I had 4 bar of 3G signal. My PC tried send data, but none was returned.
After the screenshot I place my ping data.

This morning it i working fine again. But I hope that today might be better than every other day the past three weeks where my connections (with 4 to 5 bar signal) keeps on disconnecting itself, switch to GPRS or have no connection.

Piet, I've now asked 4 times for the details so I can help you resolve this, but have yet not received anything from you.

In any case, another user in your area DID make contact with me and we did find a problem and the local guys are busy resolving. The problems seems to be transmission related thus you get full signal but no throughput.

The problem seems to be more widespread than just Langebaan and could be affecting other sites in the Western Cape, north of the boerewors line.

Ajax, are you seeing any problems?

There was a general internet apn failure in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Natal as well last night. Our friendly telco switched some of our kit off by accident.... Was restores around 21:55.

'Boerewors line' :D is that a euphemism for one of Telkodemonopolies' primary Digicrap links?

No, not at all :)

In Cape Town, most of the English speaking population live in the Southern Suburbs while the northern Suburbs are considered to be mostly Afrikaans.

So the idea of a 'boerewors' line developed when talking about this north/south split and in typical Capetonian fashion people seldom cross this line. I actually know people from both areas that's never been in the other! It's just....Cape Town....what can I say?......

(Actually people living in Hout Bay are even worse. They never come over the mountain and insist on having their own passports!)

Would that be 3G-HSDPA or vanilla-3G :p :D.

Used to mostly GPRS! I'm in a difficult spot geogrphically (as in 0 to 1 bars), so 3G was always a challenge. But with 1 to 2 bars I could get up to 1.4Mb/s.

Recently I became the proud owner of a 3G cell-extender. Now I charge my laptop from my 3G card!

At what cost? This could be a solution for others as well.

Since Tuesday I have experienced a marked improvement with my 3G connection in Langebaan. Not exceptional, but much better than the previous week and a half.

I tried 155, but that was a hopeless case. I then sent an e-mail to Vodacom Customer Care where after asking me for everything but my birth certificate, someone from their technical department eventually called me back. He left me his direct no and I can call him whenever needed.

He admitted that some problem on Vodacom's side existed and they were working on it. What I don't understand is when three or more people have the same complaint, why do they still insist that the problem lies with your specific set up before looking at there own system? Hell if my set up has worked for some time and all of a sudden I have signal problems without having changed anything on my side, surely its not my system.

Anyway, so far so good.

Good to hear it's better, but I don't think it's fixed yet.

A few reasons to ask for all the details. The more info the better one can deduce common symptoms and causes. I also ask for any 155 reference numbers, to ensure that we don't log multiple calls, but rather escalate the ones already in the system.

3G Langebaan gone again

Well yesterday I thought I had landed in 3G utopia, fastest connection since I can remember and I stayed connected the whole day – unbelievable. However today it is back to even worse than before. After a brief 30min connection this morning, I have had nothing since. No 3G, just GPRS and even that was going down to 3 bar. Just trying to post this is a challenge with a coming and going 1-2 bar 3G signal.

How is this possible, did someone fix something yesterday, and it broke again today?

OK, seems the original problem was fixed and that's why your performance was good again. This morning around 10am the Mykonos tower was taken down to add extra capacity and I suspect you were on this tower. It should be back up again. Unfortunately this was the only time-slot to do this.

Good news is that they've added some extra capacity for you, so let us know how your performance looks now. Maybe post the results of http://speed.vodacom.co.za

What happened to my HSDPA

Hi,

I am living approximately 700m up the road from Vodaworld (Lever Road) and up till now I've had near perfect HSDPA signal (4 out of 5 bars)

However since Thursday night (12/07/2007) I am not even getting 3G signal ... the best is GPRS..

What has happened to my HSDPA ..

v3g .. please help mate .. and give me an ETR if possible :)

Thanks

@v3g. You said somewhere that you were able to get 1.4mbps with a 1-2 bar signal. I was hardly ever able to get more than 1019Kbps to speed.vodacom. Is there any relationship between signal strength and speed. Even with 4-5 bars I was still limited. A friend of ours 3 houses up the road gets 1.2mbps-1.3mbps on speed test. Any explanation why this should be so.

Bad 3G speed this morning

I`m having really slow speed this morning the best speed I`m getting is 194 kbps normaly im getting around 384 kbps.Im in milnerton area.

Oh Boy

Ok then .. I guess problem solved ...

I took out the sim .. put it into a phone and cleared all the new sms's on it... put it back into the device .. and BOOM ... HSDPA :D :D :D :D :D

So that's where my speed has gone to ! ;)

Thought you never had any speed to speak of?

BTW, the guys are looking at what they can do to sort you. We're on a bit of a knee-point in buying new kit. You know what it's like, a few more weeks and you get the new stuff vs. putting in the current kit that'll be obsolete in a few weeks....your tower is caught up in this....

Can anybody explain why clearing of sms's on the sim solves speed problems & somtimes all other kinds of problems.

Only times I have some kind of speed (then I mean about 10-15Kb/s) is very early in the morning. During the day it slows way down and average 'bout 2Kb/s. But then I have time to make coffee while waiting. :D

Thanks for the update !
