Vodacom Signal Boost with Poynting

Hey,

Need some advice. Vodacom Signal in my area went to crap after it was fine for about a year. Using a huawei e220 card on a business contract, so phoned Vodacom Corporate and moaned. They came out and checked the tower in my area (Tamboerskloof, Cape Town); said they made some adjustments (which was probably a load of crap. Anyhow, it didn't resolve anything, so today they showed up and handed me a box with a Poynting window mount flat panel antenna. Stuck it to the window, and the signal strength on the crap Vodafone Mac app doubled. So, I went to www.speedtest.net and these are my results if I do a test to the US: http://www.speedtest.net/result/560498936.png

Download - 1.33 MB/s
Upload - 0.01 MB/s
Ping 2223 ms

Download had improved, but upload and latency are rubbish. Is this normal and do you guys have any suggestions on how to improve it. Download’s are fine once the actually start, but there has to be a way to improve latency and upload. Anyhow, at least I got a free antenna from Vodacom that improved the situation a little, but still...

I am having the exact same problem as you and I live in Claremont. Could you please tell me a little more about this device so that I could google it and possible purchase one if Vodacom don't want to supply me with one. What exactly did you ask them and who did you phone?

I literally have no 3G/Edge reception and barely get GPRS and i'm in the middle of Claremont, just behind Cavendish! lol! :confused: :confused: :confused: :eek:

Any info would be appreciated
 
the best i get is 3 bars, mostly 2. i don't do intensive stuff online so i just live with it.

Hey, gonna keep it short since I'm typing on my phone. Called vodacom corporate since I'm on a business contract. They called me back, then came to test the signal in my area, then, out of the blue I get a call that they want to make an appointment to drop off an antenna since they couldn't find anything wrong with their tower.

Anyhow, they gave me a poynting window mount antenna an a little elastic adapter that sticks to the 3g modem. If you can't get one from vodacom you can buy direct from Poynting. Just google them
 
The Window Mount type antenna will only work if you do get 3G signal in one of your windows.... Use your existing equipment and force your modem/mobile onto "3G only" and test at all windows (that’s if you're mobile with your modem.)

If you don't get any signal at the windows, and you're adventuress, check the roof area the same way as with the windows.

If you do get signal on the roof and none at the windows.....Jackpot... a external 3G antenna and adaptor will be your answer.

It's a good guideline but not entirely accurate. The dB boost from the antenna will be more than what your device alone can achieve. So you could go from no 3G to 3G signal once the antenna has been added.

If you have a laptop it can help to walk around the outside of your house and use MDMA to measure the signal strength to find the best location.

There is a coupling device that will allow you to use an external antenna with the stick type modems. Just tell Poynting which device you have and they can advice you accordingly.
