On the 15th of February I took out a new contract for a tablet with the VC call center.

Today VC debit my account for more than R136 000. I phoned them and found out that one of my little used sims was cloned on the 15th of February and has since been used for a massive amount of international calls.

I believe it was done by the call center because:
1. All my contracts where blocked for international calls. All the calls on this account where international
2. This is WAY over my credit limit and I was never contacted.
3. Around the same time that number dropped off my phone app and wouldnt work anymore so I could not check the balance even if I tried.
4. This is a contract account that is rarely used.

So the only person looking at my account, with my security questions, the ability to remove the credit limit and the international call blocking, and see that the account is rarely used, was the call center agent I spoke to.

So far I have called Vodacom and they have locked down the line and said that their "back office" forensics will be in contact with me.

I will also go and do an affidavit stating that I did not authorize the sim swap, nor did I make any of the calls after the sim swap was done.

Is there anything else I need to do?

Update:
I got a call this morning from a consultant at VC. All amounts after the sim swap will be credited and I just have to do a sim swap to get the line back.

I don't think 2 working days to sort this out was bad. Kudos to Jannie and the other guys for sorting it out so quick.

So besides a stressful weekend it wont impact me at all.

All Sorted

Plaster it all over social media. They (and all the other cell companies) don't care unless it hurts their image.

Be thankful it was foreign calls not a bank account type fraud...then you'd be 100% screwed.

Oh but Jannie will be in here just now going on about how banks are responsible for this.

Just as the last user to report something similar just updated his thread.

Not looking good for VC at the moment and I'm now contemplating not renewing my current two contracts and letting them go on prepaid.

I would agree - if they didn't already screw his bank account for: "Today VC debit my account for more than R136 000."

Where is Jan Spin apparently they arrested the previous guy? So there's more.

Time to take sim swop capacilities away from call centre staff. Only way to do sim swop is to present your self in a store. Finished and klaar.

I fully agree with this. Their security questions are always the same and weak when you consider social engineering.

I will not be using the call centre again.

I am sorry to hear about what has happened though. :( Get the affidavit etc sorted so it can be resolved.

Keep us updated please.

You can sim swap over the phone!!!!!????

What the actual ****?

Somebody should sue Vodacom.

They are just as arrogant as Ford.

How is an individual able to run up a bill in the hundred thousands?

Why isn't this flagged by their fraud department?

Wtf does their fraud department do?

So a vodacom customer can run up a million rand bill using data/voice and Vodacom wont flag that as suspicious? Come on! You ****ing kidding me?

****ing ****s. Disgusting.

I expect another article about how vodacom is protecting me after this.

That's no guarantee, I went into VC shop to put a limit on my data sim, saw the lady enter it into the terminal, and still got screwed cos 'the system removed the block' and they never refunded me.

Prepaid is the only safe way, no account to rape by either VC or crimbo's, plus automatic OOBshark protection. And it's cheaper..

Or switch to top up version of your contract.

Don't see any involvement by any bank here. Do you?

This could well be the same situation we discussed earlier. Seems to be the same time period. I'll check.

So are you going to finally agree you'll have a massive problem? Especially with regards to social engineering or are you going to keep beating around the bush?
