Vodacom - Skype shaping and bandwidth usage questions

I'm back in SA for a three week holiday, and I found that every time I use Skype and Skype-Out it goes off-line after about 2 ~ 5 mins, and I then have to disconnect the HSDPA modem again to surf the net.

Pay as you go SIM with data bundle loaded.

Is anyone else having this problem - just want to know if I should keep trying.

I use Skype everyday, all day. I have no issues with it.

I noticed on friday night that whilst on a call my data counter sky rocketed, don't know if they decided to use my connection as a node or something but in general no problems with skype at all.

No traffic on the Vodacom network is shaped in any way.

I remember a while back I was querying the use of Skype on a 3G wireless service and the answer I got was something along the lines of no network operator can guarantee quality of service over it's UMTS wireless service for VoIP calls including Skype.

This was a while ago though, I'm not sure if the quality of service has changed since then. Since VoIP has become so mainstream.

I just remember a while ago I knew someone who was fighting with Vodacom saying he uses Skype for business purposes and that it would break up a lot and he'd get disconnected, so he couldn't hold a decent conversation. Vodacom told him they cannot guarantee quality of service over their 3G network for VoIP. I remember he had very high latency so that could have been the problem. So he cancelled and went to a fixed line operator - Telkom.

Skype video call performance over 3G - any comments?

Anybody have regular use experience using webcams and software like Skype video call over a 3G connection? Is the jitter associated with wireless connections like 3G a hampering factor, or is it usable?

I use Skype video calls on Vodacom 3G quite often without any problems at all

Thanks, that is basically all I needed to know Do you maybe have a rough estimate of bandwidth usage for the video calls?

I use skype almost 24/7, use approx 400mb over 8 hours, that being on cam and voice the whole time. Hope that helps
