I'd also consider where you live / what reception is like.
On average in the Gardenroute/Karoo area, MTN is vastly better if you have a smartphone (who doesn't?) and going to use 3g/hdspa/etc.

Pretty sure you can port contract numbers too...just not in the middle of a contract.No, prepaid only.

I think they are allowed to refuse, but there's no technical reason it can't be done. Obviously customers usually wouldn't want to because they'll be paying for a contract they can't use.That's interesting, thanks.
