Im currently with Vodacom. it seems that they will not get Iphone 4s this century. MTN have stock. Im thinking of porting to MTN. The problem is that their is a lot of paperwork involved. Is it worth the change?

Not so much paperwork as far as I remember and IMO? Definitely worth it as long as you do not have to sign another 24 month contract

My contract with vodacom is up for renewal so their is no problem.

I'd also consider where you live / what reception is like.
On average in the Gardenroute/Karoo area, MTN is vastly better if you have a smartphone (who doesn't?) and going to use 3g/hdspa/etc.

Is it possible to port a number that is still under contract?

According to MTN yes, but porting obviously does not mean you don't have to continue paying for the contract.

That's interesting, thanks. I was imagining a system where you keep paying for your contract, but you get a different number, and your old number moves to a new network. I must ask Vodacom if this is possible...

I think they are allowed to refuse, but there's no technical reason it can't be done. Obviously customers usually wouldn't want to because they'll be paying for a contract they can't use.
